As doctors were racing against the time to save patients infected with COVID-19 (新型冠状病毒), thousands of volunteers also stepped up to play supporting roles in fighting against the epidemic (疫情) in Wuhan. And among them are some foreigners.
Philippe Klein, a French doctor, who has been in Wuhan for six years, chose to stick to his post. Since outbreak (爆发) of the epidemic, Klein has been busy caring for foreign patients in the city. He said, “I like Wuhan and the friendly people of Wuhan. I am a doctor, so I have to do my duty. I’m proud that I stayed.”
Sina Karami from Iran works as a barista (咖啡师) at a cafe. It has been two years since she and her brother lived in Wuhan. After the outbreak of the epidemic, Sina chose to stay. There are several hospitals near the cafe treating patients with COVID-19. Her cafe delivered coffee to nearby hospitals free every day. Sina said, “I won’t leave Wuhan at this difficult moment. The fearlessness of the medical staff impresses me, and I will also not retreat—instead, I will continue to provide help for the medical staff.”
Haroon Nomaan, a Pakistan (巴基斯坦) engineer working for Lenovo in Wuhan, also volunteered to help translate some Chinese documents in English and Urdu (乌尔都语). “Whenever I’m needed, I’ll be happy to help others.” he said.
What these international friends have done shows that “Virus knows no borders, but the worst of times reveals (揭露) the best in people.”
