In a community (社区) in Changsha, Hunan, there is a special hair salon (理发店). The owner is 71-year-old Tang Jinlian from Yongzhou, Hunan.

The salon is open from 8:30 a. m. to noon, serving around 10 people every day. Tang only asks for three yuan for each haircut (理发).

Tang’s daughter became ill when she was three. Because of this, Tang and her daughter got a lot of help from others. To give back to others, Tang learned how to cut hair and hoped to serve others.

In 2004, Tang’s son came to work in Changsha. Tang and her daughter followed. At first, Tang set up a hairdressing stall (理发摊) at a vegetable market. Later she moved the stall to Lufeng Community, Changsha. But it was too small and few people wanted to come. Finally, the community workers helped her. In 2015, they turned a garage (车库) into a hair salon for Tang to use.

Tang said, “In the past, many people helped me. Now I want to help more people.”

Tom, 15, is a high school student in California, US. He has gotten used to online learning. To help students who cannot keep up with their studies at home, he started a new online tutoring (辅导) business in mid-March.

It’s called Tutors for Good. It has free peer-to-peer (同龄人对同龄人的) tutoring in different subjects every week. If students need more help, there are extra（额外的）half-hour classes that cost 15 dollars.

Tom started his first business at the age of 10. He taught students how to use their electronic equipments. More recently, he tutored other students in math. When schools closed and he could no longer do in-person tutoring, he came up with the idea for an online service. He uses an online app so that students and tutors can work together.

Since starting tutorsforgood.com, Tom has asked other students to work as tutors. Lily, a junior, is tutoring in biology and chemistry. Tom tutors in math.

Besides looking for other tutors, Tom is also looking for companies to help pay the tutors and give more free services to poor students. He hopes the business can continue even after the quarantine（隔离）ends.

Today was a special day for me.

I went to school by bus in the early morning. An old man was sitting next to me. He held a bunch of flowers in his hands. They were so lovely that I couldn’t stop looking at them. When he got off the bus, he placed the flowers in my hand. I was excited to receive them.

I got off the bus when it arrived at the next station. I walked to school happily. Suddenly, I saw a little boy sitting by the roadside, crying. I went over and asked him why he was crying. He said sadly, “ Today is my mother’s birthday, but I don’t have any money to buy anything for my mom.” I thought for a while and said, “I don’t have any money either, but I have some flowers. I can give you three of them.” He said thanks to me and then walked away.

When I finished my classes, I found the little boy waiting for me in front of the school’s main gate. He seemed so happy. He stood in front of me and said, “ I gave a flower to my mother and she was very excited. Thank you. By the way, you might want to know where the other two flowers went. When I was on my way back home on the bus, I met an old woman who had just gone to visit her husband in a cemetery (公墓). Her eyes were full of tears and she was so nice. So I gave her two flowers to cheer her up.”

I smiled. Yes, that is how love works.
