That day, Tom was called to his teacher Dwyer’s office. He was feeling a little _______ when he chatted with his teacher.

“I just feel as if I had no _______ of my life at the moment. My parents are telling me one thing, and my friends are telling me another. Everything keeps _______ and I am not sure what I should do next.” Dwyer nodded his head and left the room for a moment, returning with a _______.

He set it down on the table between them and asked Tom to start. They exchanged a few turns without any real _______ before Dwyer spoke for the first time.

“In the game of chess, who are you?” Dwyer asked, “At the moment, I feel like a pawn(卒子). I am _______ in my movement and don’t have much ability,” answered Tom. “Who would you rather be?” Dwyer asked. “I’d rather be the queen, of course. She can move in any direction and is the most _______ piece on the chessboard,” Tom said. “Are you sure about that?” Dwyer added. “Of course! Isn’t it _______?” Tom answered.

Dwyer sat back in the chair and said in a quiet, yet firm voice, “You shouldn’t be the pawn, or the queen. You need to be the _______ moving the pieces around. Stop being __________ around by others and take charge. There are too many people around us whose lives are __________ by the decisions of their bosses, their parents, their peers and the media. You are better than them, so step up and take charge! We weren’t born to be pieces moved around on a chessboard. We were born to positively influence the world around us.”

Tom understood and smiled, “Checkmate(国际象棋中攻击对方将帅).” With that, he __________ from his chair and walked out of Dwyer’s office, decided to change the world.

Could you imagine a library where you borrow tools, appliances and sports gear(用具)? As a student, Sabrina could see the simple solution to a problem — in order to reduce waste and create a good effect on our environment, perhaps we should try sharing the things we have.

When she arrived in Brisbane four years ago, Sabrina had nothing with her but a suitcase full of clothes and a laptop. To start settling in, she asked friends if she could borrow the things she needed. Over time, as she started to have things of her own, she would _______ them to her friends in return.

She then came to the conclusion that we don’t need to own every single tool for every single_______, we just need to have them; we need a place where we can borrow what we need —in other words, a library. Sabrina decided to put her idea into action and so the Brisbane Tool Library was born.

Within two years the tool library has grown to over 225 members and today is run by a team of volunteers, mostly women, from 13 different nationalities. For a small membership fee, the library offers _______ from hand and power tools to sporting and camping gear, and kitchen equipment.

The library now has over 500 items in its storeroom with another 500 waiting to come. These are items that would otherwise have gone into landfill when their owners are _________ them sitting on the shelf — most are still new. “It doesn’t need to be like this,” says Sabrina. “It’s not just about reducing waste when things are at the _______ of their life cycle. And recycling is not enough. We need to rethink purchasing from the very beginning. We need some change.”

It’s a part of the rise of the share economy, where phone apps allow _______ to share   rarely-used goods with people who need them. Libraries have been around for centuries offering public use of shared resources.
