February 29th comes up on the calendar only every four years. A year with a February 29th might be good news if you are paid by the day or the week. But it might be bad news if you were born on a February 29th. You have to wait three years in between birthdays!

American English has an expression for the unusual situation. February 29th is called a leap day (闰日) . And the year with a February 29th in it is called a leap year. This year, 2020, is such a year.

As a verb, the word “leap” means to jump, or to move quickly. “Leap” can also be a noun, meaning a jump, or a sudden move.

In a leap year, the dates jump over one day of the week. Let me explain. In 2017, the last day of the year, December 31st, fell on a Sunday. In 2018, it fell on a Monday. In 2019, it fell on a Tuesday. But in 2020, December 31st will fall on a Thursday. It jumps right over Wednesday.

The reason for a leap day or a leap year is because our calendar does not follow the Earth’s orbit (轨道) around the sun exactly. Each year, we have a little time left over. So every four years, we put all that time together into an extra (额外的) day.

Some people choose to marry on February 29th because it is an unusual date. But some ancient peoples would likely tell couples not to do it. Leap years were believed to be difficult, and leap days were unlucky. To be honest, these have no scientific basis (依据).

Every day there is less and less space on the Earth for rubbish. Yet every day we make more and more rubbish. What can we do? We can recycle some of our rubbish. Recycling means that the rubbish will be made into something that can be used again.

Recycling helps Earth. And it saves space in rubbish dumps. Half of everything that we put into landfills could be recycled instead. In fact, most things made of paper, metal, glass and plastic can be recycled.

Paper can be broken into small pieces and made into new paper. Steel and aluminum cans(金属罐)can be melted down(熔化)and made into new cans. The same is true of glass bottles. This can be done over and over again. Recycling doesn’t take as much energy as making these things the first time. So we can use less of Earth’s fuel resources.

Plastic can be melted down, too. Then it can be formed into park benches, playgrounds and so on. Some people call plastic the “wood” of the future. Things made of plastic will last about 400 years—even if they stay outside in the weather. No wood can do that!

Did you see snow in your home town last winter? Did you feel it was warmer than before? “There have been 21 warm winters in China since 1986,” said scientists. They also said that in the past 100 years, as the global(全球的) temperatures went up by 0.74 ℃, the temperature in North China has gone up by 1.4℃ in only 50 years.
China needs to take quick action to cut carbon dioxide emission(排放), because it’s the main reason for global warming. We plan to cut energy use by 20% and pollution emission by 10% in the 11th Five-Year Plan.
Can you slow global warming? Sure! You and your family can take steps to cut the amount of carbon dioxide that is sent out into the air.
Here are some pieces of advice to help you save the earth.
Wear used clothes. Wearing your brother’s, sister’s or dad’s old T-shirts means you save the energy.
Ride on the bus. Taking a bus saves a lot of oil every year.
Open the window. Don’t use the air conditioner(空调), and let some fresh air in. When you have to use it, set the temperature higher in summer and lower in winter to save energy.
Make small changes in your daily life. Don’t use paper cups, bags and boxes.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that lets machines do things that need “thinking.” It is a hard term to define (下定义) because AI isn’t actually one thing. Rather it’s a group of technologies that help machines get, understand and use information to perform tasks. The range of technologies is one of the reasons people use so many different terms to describe AI. In addition to artificial intelligence, terms like machine learning, cognitive computing and deep learning are common.

No matter which term is used, recent developments have received a lot of public attention. Some have welcomed the technology because of things that AI makes possible. For example, AI will have a big effect on areas like medicine and engineering. But the public attention has also produced a lot of fear and caution. In particular, many are concerned about the effects AI could have on people’s jobs.

According to a recent study, nearly five percent of jobs will disappear because of AI. High on the list are jobs in the producing and mining industries, where systems powered by AI are already performing tasks that people used to do, such as assembling (组装) cars, digging tunnels and loading materials. In the future, self-driving cars and trucks that depend on AI will also steal jobs for drivers. Moreover, AI systems will do many tasks now performed by legal assistants and accountants.

On the other hand, AI will also create many new jobs. More people will be needed to write software for AI systems as well as to set up and operate them. Meanwhile, jobs that require emotional intelligence, excellent communication skills and interaction with people will not be replaced by Al. These include jobs in fields like teaching, nursing, hairdressing and personal training.

A.They are still too expensive to use.
B.They may not ensure passengers’ safety.
C.They do not require human operators.
D.They cannot offer comfort and convenience.

A.Those who provide medical care.
B.Those who dig in coal mines.
C.Those who work for railway companies.
D.Those who run recycling centers.
