Many people spend large part of time indoors—as much as 80-90% of their lives. We work, study, eat, drink and sleep in enclosed (封闭的) environment where there isn’t much fresh air. For these reasons, some experts feel that more people suffer from the effects of indoor air pollution than outdoor pollution.
There are many reasons to cause serious indoor air pollution, such as smoking, cooking and heating appliances (仪器). Also we can smell vapors (蒸汽) from building materials, paints, furniture, which can cause pollution inside buildings. Some kind of natural dangerous gas from the earth can be found concentrated (集中的) in basements (地下室) in some parts of the United States.
Pollution at home and work is often greater than outdoors. It is estimated (估计) that indoor air pollution levels are 25-62% greater than outside levels and can cause serious health problems.
Both indoor and outdoor pollution need to be controlled and prevented.
