O·Henry was an American writer of short stories. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born in 1862 in North Carolina.
At the age of three, his mother died. He didn’t go to school for very long, but he taught himself everything he needed to know. When he was about 20 years old, O·Henry went to Texas. Later he tried different jobs. He first worked for a newspaper, and then found a job in a bank. But the bank thought he took away the money, so he was in prison (监狱) for three years. There he began to write short stories.
In 1902 he moved to New York. He continued (继续) writing and became successful and rich. He died in 1910. In his life, he wrote lots of short stories. His stories always finished with a very special ending. People like them very much.
