Kids should learn when they should call 911 because sometimes accidents happen. I will never forget the day when I first called 911.

One day, I was sitting on a rock watching my mom ride a horse. Suddenly, the horse kicked and she fell off the horse. She landed on the ground, rolled over, got up on her knees, and held her face in her hand. The horse ran off.

I was in a bit of shock (震惊). I shouted to my mom and asked if she was all right. She didn’t answer. Instead, she ran into the house. I was scared, but I knew my mom would want me to make sure the horse was safe. I found the horse and let him back to the barn (牲口棚).

After I put the horse in the barn, I ran into the house. My mom did not look OK. I called 911 and told the operator (接线员) what had happened. Soon an ambulance (救护车) came.

It drove us a short distance (距离) to where a plane was waiting to take my mom to hospital. In the ambulance, I called my mom’s best friend, and soon she came and took me to the hospital, too.

On the way to the hospital, I was scared and started to cry. Would my mom be OK?

Luckily, after five days, in the hospital, she got well and came home. She said I was a brave girl. I was so happy to have her back. She could ride the horse again after about six weeks.

It was a cold January morning. A man sat at a subway station in Washington DC and started to play the violin. When the musician played, thousands of people went through the station, but most of them didn’t stop.

A few minutes went by and a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing music. He slowed down and stopped for a few seconds and then he walked away hurriedly. Four minutes after he played the violin, the violinist received his first tip. A woman threw the money in the violin case without stopping and continued to walk.

In the musician’s 45-minute performance, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk. He collected $32 in all. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it.

No one knew the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. Two days before his playing at the subway station, the tickets for Joshua Bell’s performance were sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats each cost 100 dollars.

Joshua Bell’s playing in the subway station was a social experiment. It asks questions: in a common environment at a wrong hour, do we enjoy beauty? Do we stop to make a response (反应)?
