He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got from the dock at his family's cabin on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before the bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch(鲈鱼)with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵)and practiced casting. The lure struck the water and caused colored ripples in the sunset, then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake.
When his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. Finally, he very gingerly lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a perch . The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish. Then the father lit a match(火柴) and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.--- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy.
"You'll have to put it back, son," he said.
"Dad!" cried the boy.
"There will be other fish," said his father.
"Not as big as this one," cried the boy.
He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could know everything by his father's clear voice that the decision could not be changed. He slowly worked the hook(钩) out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.
The creature swished its powerful body and disappeared. The boy suspected that he would never again see such a great fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. His father's cabin is still there on the island in the middle of the lake. He takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.
He was right. He has never again caught such a magnificent fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see that same fish---again and again---every time he comes up against a question of ethics(道德规范).

After the Easter vacation, I returned to my morning routine of doing exercise—running at the area near my house early in the morning. After one hour I returned to my house to have a rest again, and then I turned on my mobile phone and wrote on Facebook “Good Morning, everyone”.

I just wanted to greet (和……打招呼) people. That was just a greeting. The next day, I did the same when I woke up early. I ran in the same place, but everyone I met on the road greeted me with “Good morning” from the shop owner to the student. That surprised me a lot. I just smiled at them and I asked myself why so many people greeted me during the day. They were not my friends on Facebook. Maybe they always saw me in the morning, or just wanted to catch my attention.

Then I realized that it was a message from God. He wanted me to know and share that even a small thing of kindness we did will return to us in the near future.

Spread love and we will receive love.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too difficult for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even impossible. What’s more, my father is always angry. When he’s very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to be angry.
One day, my mother was sewing (缝) a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while.
“What?” she replied, still doing her work.
“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer at once and continued to sew the quilt. I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was embarrassed and I didn’t know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at this thread(线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable(耐用的). If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is inside.”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very weak. It seemed both of them had had a serious illness. After they were back, every day in the morning and in the evening, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. The doctor had said my father would get well in two months. But after two months he still couldn’t walk by himself. Both of us were worried about him.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t worry about me.” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom. I like this kind of life.” Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

Erik Weihenmayer was born legally blind. By the age of 13, he lost his eye sight completely.

In 1991, Weihenmayer graduated from Boston College with a degree in English and started teaching. Two years later he moved from Phoenix to Colorado and decided to join a gym. Travelling to the gym by bus, he got off at a park whose roads he could navigate(导航) alone. However, Weihenmayer ended up walking into a lake because of the snow on the roads. So he returned to the bus stop and tried again and again. When he finally did reach the gym, it was closed. “Faced with that kind of trouble,” he said. “You can see life as a bad dream or as an adventure. I chose the adventure.”

In 2001, Weihenmayer became the first and only blind man who managed to climb up to the top of Mount Everest, an achievement that put him on the cover of Time magazine.

Weihenmayer climbs not because he’s a superhuman, but only because he’s a human. Although he could not enjoy the view, Erik felt the excitement of being on the top of Mountain Everest. He hopes that his success will change how people think about the blind. “When people think about a blind person or blindness, now they will think about a person standing on top of the world.”
