Losing Our Language?
The Internet is a place where we can talk freely. But it is also a place where we pay little attention to whether or not our language competence (能力) is becoming poorer.
According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 76 percent of young people in China said they felt their Chinese language skills have declined (下降).
They don’t use complex rhetorical technique (修辞手法) as often as before anymore. It is believed that digital (数字的) technology and Internet memes (表情包) have changed their communication habits.
For example, direct expression is the preferred way to communicate online. When one sees something funny, one will simply type “hahaha” or use the “cry-laugh” emoji.
Also, “copy” culture is getting popular. People simply pick up expressions from the Internet without much thought. Many begin to use a fixed set of sentence patterns, such as “whenever you disagree with each other”.
Cai Xiaojia, a teacher from Fuzhou, told China Youth Daily that words in general are being used less. For instance, people can share photos online with little need for words to describe them.

Why should we learn Chinese well
How many books do you read every day? According to a survey, Chinese people read an average of 4.39 books a year, while Americans 21 and the Japanese read 17.
Reading books can build a bridge between our life and the unknown world. In many foreign countries, people read at any time. Many hotels abroad also offer book—exchanges to visitors. In most US middle schools, teachers give students a reading list every few weeks. Most books are easy to read. In order to courage people to read more, China is planning to put the habit of reading in its law. What can we do to develop good reading habits?
Reading in short periods. Ten minutes on the way to and from school, 10 minutes when waiting for friends, and 15 minutes before going to sleep.
Make your own reading list. Your list can include the best—selling books on famous websites like The New York Times or Dangdang.com, or books your teacher recommends.
Talk about your reading with your family or friends. It can make reading more interesting.
