“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is a popular song for children. But have you ever wondered why the stars twinkle? I’m afraid many adults don’t understand this question, let’s unlock the mystery of the stars!

When we look up to the sky on a clear, dark night, our eyes can see about 6,000 stars in the sky. Some stars look like they are always twinkling and winkling. They are very beautiful. In fact, most of the stars are shining with a steady (稳定的) light. Not all stars twinkle. The stars that twinkle are generally stars. In addition to the Sun, the nearest star to the Earth, the neighboring star (比邻星), is also more than 4 light years away from Earth. Because the distance is too far, the stars we see are only a small point. Also, from the distant star travels a long way through the atmosphere (大气) down to us on Earth. At the same time, air is moving in the atmosphere of Earth. The movement of air causes the starlight to get slightly bent. To our eyes, this makes the star to twinkle. You will notice that stars closer to the horizon appear to twinkle more than other stars. This is because there is more atmosphere between you and a star near the horizon. However, there is no atmosphere in space to make the stars seem to twinkle. That’s why the Hubble telescope (哈勃望远镜), which is in space, can take such clear pictures of other galaxies (星系).

Go out tonight and take a look at the stars twinkling in the sky!

Amazing Space

Curiosity, NASA’s Mars rover (探测器), recently took the world by surprise. It took a picture of a small “flower” while it was exploring the surface of Mars.

Clearly, it’s not an actual flower. But it could be a rock that had been created a long time ago. Back then, the Red Planet possibly had water on its surface.

The effort of the rover could help answer the question of whether life ever existed on Mars and understand when Mars might have been most suitable to host life.

Saturn’s (土星) beautiful rings which are made of ice and rocks won’t last forever. Scientists say that they are slowly breaking apart and will totally disappear in about 300 million years. The rings now may be 10 — 100 million years old. According to The Atlantic, 10 tons of “ring matter” fall into Saturn every second. They all get pulled by Saturn’s gravity.

Jupiter (木星), Uranus (天王星) and Neptune (海王星) also have ring systems. Saturn has the largest rings, though — the others’ rings aren’t as easy to see, they may have had bigger rings in the past.

【小题1】How many types of planets are mentioned in the text?
A.Three.B.Four.C.Five.D.Six.
【小题2】Which of the following is True?
A.The two pictures were both taken by NASA’s Mars rover.
B.The ring systems of Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune are easy to see.
C.There is no doubt that Mars had water on its surface long ago.
D.The beautiful rings of Saturn will disappear because of the gravity.
【小题3】What can we know about the picture of a small “flower”?
A.There is a real flower in the picture.
B.The picture was taken by accident.
C.The “flower” proves that there were lives existing on Mars.
D.The picture will help us have a better understanding of Mars.
【小题4】How does the writer show us the result of the disappearance of Saturn’s rings?
A.By offering numbers.B.By asking questions.
C.By giving examples.D.By making comparisons.
【小题5】The writer wrote the text in order to ________.
A.compare Mars with SaturnB.show the new discoveries of space
C.introduce the changes of the two planetsD.encourage us to protect the planet we live

Are we humans alone in space? Scientists have been working on this question for a long time. And recently, new discoveries offer more hope that some form of life existed on Mars in the past, and perhaps is still there at present.

According to a new report in the book Science, the Mars Explorer Curiosity has found more methane (甲烷) in the Martian air. It might suggest the possibility of life.

During the last 20 months, Curiosity has found methane many times, and four of them, it tested at a level 10 times higher than usual. “It’s a great increase,” said Christopher Webster, the lead scientist.

This new finding has made a big change. In September 2013, Curiosity found almost no sign of methane on Mars. Just weeks later, however, the explorer picked up the gas.

Methane is also found in Earth’s air, and comes from animal and plant life, as well as from the environment itself. If there’s methane in Mars’ air, where is it coming from? Scientists aren’t sure.

“There are many possible sources, such as actions between water and rock,” guessed Sushil, a scientist of the Curiosity team.

But the scientists have left the possibility open that microbes (微生物) could be the methane’s source. Also, for the first time, Curiosity found other organisms (有机物) in the rocks of Mars. Organisms are thought to be the basis to form life. Scientists aren’t sure where these organisms come from. They could either have formed on Mars or landed on Mars by meteorites (陨石).

For the next three years, Curiosity will keep looking for more organisms in rocks and exploring Mars.

【小题1】Where did Curiosity recently find methane?
A.In the Martian air.B.In the air on Earth.C.In rocks on Mars.D.In the water on Mars.
【小题2】Scientists predict that there might be life on Mars because ________.
A.methane is a sign of lifeB.astronauts sent to Mars have seen signs of life
C.the Mars Explorer has taken some photos of animalsD.the environment on Mars is similar to that on Earth
【小题3】Scientists think ________ may be the basis to form life.
A.rocksB.meteoritesC.methaneD.organisms
【小题4】From the last two paragraphs, we learn that ________.
A.scientists are sure to have found life on MarsB.methane is the basis to form life
C.there is more to learn about MarsD.there are no rocks and water on Mars

“Is there life out there?” is a question which scientists are trying to answer. They look for life in space. In recent years, they have turned their attention to Europa, the sixth closest moon of Jupiter (木星).

Europa is a little smaller than the moon and is covered by ice. Its surface is too cold for anything to live there. Scientists want to know what lies under the ice, for that is where any life on Europa would most likely be.

For years, scientists believed all life on the earth depended on the sun. The discovery of chemosynthetic (化学合成的) life has changed scientists’ idea—planets with oceans (海洋) and hydrothermal vents (热液喷口) might also support life.

Europa does have oceans. In fact, Europa appears to have more oceans than the earth does. The ice on this moon’s surface covers what appears to be moving water. Do these oceans have hydrothermal vents? Scientists do not know yet. If they do, the oceans of Europa might support life. Only a space travel to Europa would tell for certain.

Scientists are studying the closest possible environment they can find on the earth: Lake Vostok. Like Europa’s oceans, Lake Vostok is miles under a frozen surface. It does not receive direct sunlight, either.

So like Europa, the lake cannot support photosynthetic (光合作用的) life. If scientists find life in the lake, it would support the idea that there might also be life on Europa.
