The Maowusu Desert, once one of the four main deserts in China, is becoming a green land. It is between Shanxi and Inner Mongolia and was known as “Devil’s Land (恶魔之地)” in the past. Many years ago, local people experienced a lot of sand-related disasters. There were strong sandstorms. Just to get out of their houses they had to clear thick sand away from front doors.
From 1959, local people decided to fight back the sand. Since then, they have planted trees to slow down the wind, and worked hard to turn the sandy land into farmland. Yin Yuzhen came to live near the Maowusu Desert after she married her husband in 1985. Once she saw a small tree growing in their yard, and then she decided to protect her family through planting trees.
Yin and her husband bought 600 small trees in the spring of 1986 and planted them around their house. Though she had taken very good care of the trees, only 10 of them were still alive in the following year. Instead of feeling sad, Yin was hopeful. She said it meant that trees could live in this environment. After 30 years of hard work by Yin and her family, the sand world around their house has become an endless green place.
Now 80% of the Maowusu Desert has been changed. Today, there are forests, farmlands, cows and sheep and even highways in the desert.
Clearly it is a miracle (奇迹). Millions of people’s hard work and the country’s plan and help make all of this come true. Now people there don’t have to worry about the sand-related disasters. What’s more, their lives have improved a lot.

You don’t have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One foreign designer(设计师) is finding creative ways to make a change, and he’s inviting bikers to join him.
Daan Roosgaarde, 38, is a designer from Holland(荷兰). He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog(雾霾) Free Project, he designed a special tower that cleans air in Chinese parks. In Holland, he designed a shining bicycle path.
Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at a Chinese bike-sharing company to create a new product for public use. It’s an air-cleaning machine connected to a bicycle, which is part of the Smog Free Project. In smoggy weather, the machine would breathe in the dirty air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air toward the biker’s face.
In winter, it’s common for thick clouds of haze(霾), caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions(排放物), to cover areas of China.
“Of course one tower and a few bikes won’t solve China’s air pollution problem,” Daan said. “But smog-free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully encourage communities to create greener cities.”
【小题1】How does the air-cleaning machine offer clean air to the biker?A.By blowing out dirty air. |
B.By running fast by bike. |
C.By cleaning the air around the biker. |
D.By breathing in the dirty air and cleaning it. |
A.To help solve the air pollution problem. |
B.To make more Chinese friends. |
C.To raise money for the tower. |
D.To test his new machine. |
A.Biking for Fresh Air |
B.Breathing in and out |
C.Survey from the Government |
D.China’s Air Pollution Problem |
We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we’re young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment.
Remember these three words: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce means “use less”. Don’t waste things.
Reuse means “use again”.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺,内容完整。
A.Use things for as long as possible. |
B.This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. |
C.Recycle means “change things into something else”. |
D.Here are some ideas for you to live green life. |
E.Don’t use a paper cup or a paper bag. |
All kinds of things can be recycled. The most common materials(材料) like glass, plastic, paper, metals, cloth are all recyclable. Sometimes these products are broken down to make the same kinds of products. An example of this type of recycling is using paper to make more paper. Garbage can also be broken down to make completely new items(物品) as well!
Some items, like glass, can be recycled forever(永远)! We can use glass items, then break them down and use them again and again. Aluminum(铝)cans are one of the most successful recycled metals. They can be recycled again and again and nearly 60% of all cans have been recycled.
The average(平均) family of four can produce nearly 2,000 pounds of garbage each year. As time goes on, we have fewer places to put all of this garbage in. Recycling is one way to limit(限制)the amount of garbage we need to put into the land.
The next time you toss a can or bottle into the dustbin, look to see if there is a recycling triangle on the label. It is the international sign for recycling. It means that the item you are going to throw in the dustbin could be recycled .
