What should we do if one of our classmates suddenly falls ill or gets hurt? Here are some steps you should follow. But always remember to look for medical care after first aid if the wound is serious.

Broken bones: Take away clothing from the wound. Use an ice pack. Don’t move the hurt body part while waiting for the doctor to arrive.

Animal bites (咬伤): Wash the bite area with soap and water quickly. Pack the wound with a clean cloth if it is bleeding. If the bleeding has stopped, cover the area with a bandage and take the person to the hospital. Make sure you remember what kind of animal it is, so the doctor can find the right way to treat him or her at once.

Fainting (昏厥): Have him or her lie with feet lifted a little. Don’t move the body if you think there might be wounds from the fall. Make sure he or she can breathe and let in fresh air. Clean the person’s face with a cool cloth.

Nosebleeds: Have the person sit up with his or her head tilted (倾斜) forward a little. Do not have the person tilt his or her head back because this may cause heavy breathing or coughing. Pinch (捏) the lower part of the nose for at least 10 minutes.

One day, Debbie heard someone calling worriedly at her front door, “Anyone home? My brother Dylan is bleeding.” It was 12-year-old Amy from next door.

Debbie and her sister Ellen ran to their house to find 6-year-old Dylan bleeding heavily from a large cut in his arm.

Amy was looking after Dylan when their mum Jane went shopping. Dylan fell when running through the house, accidentally cutting his arm through a glass door.

Luckily, Debbie took a first aid (急救) class not long ago and knew what to do. “I knew I needed to do something to stop the bleeding. I got a towel (毛巾) from the shower room and pressed it on the cut,” she said.

Dylan was crying and shaking, so Debbie spoke comfortingly (安慰地) to him when pressing on the towel to stop the blood flowing. She told Ellen to call for an ambulance (救护车) as she knew Dylan would need it. Amy was so scared to see Dylan’s blood that she had to go and wait in another room.

Just as the ambulance arrived, Dylan’s mum came home. She was upset at first, but soon she knew what happened and put Dylan in her arms. Then the two of them traveled together to the hospital in the ambulance.

Dylan’s mum thanked Debbie and Ellen the next day. Debbie said, “I never thought I’d need to use what I learned in my first aid class so soon, but I ’m very glad I knew how to do it. I didn’t need a first aid box. The towel did a great job in stopping the bleeding.”

A neighbor called 911 at 11:09 am after seeing smoke coming from a house in the No. 5 road of 54th Street Southeast.

The owner of the house was able to get his older child and the family dog out of the house on fire. Just then Monroe police officers arrived. The father said his younger daughter was still in the house but he didn’t know where she was.

Officers did a quick search(搜寻) of the house but couldn’t find the girl. One of the officers, Bill, closed the door to the bedroom—that’s where the fire started—to control the fire and slow its spread(蔓延). Firefighters arrived and after searching the sofa and the small bed in another bedroom, one firefighter noticed the closed toy box at the foot of the bed.

“She wasn’t making sounds.” later the firefighter said of the girl, “I opened it up and saw her. She was lying in the box quietly.”

Firefighters got the girl outside. The doctors examined her body carefully. Luckily she was fine. The fire was quickly put out(扑灭). The police officer Bill got praise for closing the door to the bedroom in time. And the girl’s father thanked firefighters very much.
