Henry Black and Ned Bell live near our house. They go to school, and I see them go by each day with their books.

To get to the school, they usually walk along Long Road and turn right when they see the bank. Go along Bridge Road. The school is on the right.

Miss May tells the girls and boys that they must be at the schoolhouse when the bell rings (响起铃声). So Henry walks fast, and is the first at school. He is a good boy, and wants to keep the rule of the school.

Ned is not a good boy. I do not think he likes to go to school. I saw him try to kill a quail (鹌鹑) with a stone (石头). The quail is too quick a bird for that, and Ned did not hurt it; but I know that a good child would not try to kill a bird.

Jamaria Crump, 11, is good at making lemonade. In fact, she has turned it into a business (生意). In her hometown in Maryland, US, she has a lemonade stand (摊位) called Lemon Topia. The stand is open three days a week. She also sells lemon-flavored (柠檬味的) pies, cakes and cookies at her stand.

Crump loves cooking and baking (烘焙). She says the kitchen is her favourite room in the house. Two years ago, she wanted to have a lemonade stand at her school’s bake sale. Her school said that was fine, but also asked her to sell other things, like cookies and cheesecake. After the bake sale was over, she started selling her goods at other school activities.

Later, she decided to start her own business. It took her one year to make her own lemonade recipe (配方). She also made new flavors of lemonade, such as apple and cotton candy (棉花糖). For now, Crump is just making and selling lemonade. But she is dreaming big - she wants to be a pastry chef (糕点厨师) in Paris someday.

In ancient China, there were two hard-working children, CheYin and Sun Kang. They loved reading, but their families were poor and couldn’t afford lamp oil(灯油) for them to study at night. How did the children get over the difficulty? Here are their stories.

Che Yin’s story began on a hot summer night. He saw fireflies(萤火虫) flying around and an idea came into his mind. He caught some fireflies and put them into a cloth bag. Then he hung the bag up as a lamp. He spent all of his summer nights reading like this.

The other story happened in winter. Sun Kang woke up on a cold night. He saw the moon shine so brightly on the snow and it made the night brighter. “I can read with the light!” he thought. So he took his books outside and read, even though it was very cold.

Later, Che Yin and Sun Kang became successful. Their stories were turned into a Chinese phrase nangying yingxue. Now it is used to describe studying hard day and night.

Difficulties cannot stop young minds from learning. If there is a will(意志), there is always light on the road to knowledge.
