Electric cars may seem like a recent invention, but they’ve been around for years. In the early 1900s, there were more electric cars on the road than there were petrol(汽油)cars. At that time, petrol was expensive compared with other fuels(燃料). When petrol prices dropped and new technologies were developed, electric cars went out of fashion. Instead, petrol cars became more popular because they could travel longer distances without stopping.

During the 20th century, petrol cars got bigger, heavier and faster. They needed more fuel, and it caused more air pollution. For years, car makers didn’t worry about pollution. They didn’t worry about the amount of petrol cars’ use, either. But when people began to realize that there was not enough oil on the earth, they asked car makers to produce more efficient(高效能的)and less polluting cars.

One method of solving the problem was a “hybrid” car(混合动力车), one that ran partly on petrol and partly on electricity. Hybrid cars became popular in the 2000s when petrol prices went up and the prices of hybrid cars went down.

An all-electric car uses no petrol. The problem, however, is that car batteries(电池)need to be recharged(再充电). That makes electric cars not so useful for long journeys.

Many people are not pleased with it. The government and car makers are working together to develop safe, cheap and useful electric cars. When people have these cars in the future, a petrol station may be a thing of the past.

If you go to London, you can see a lot of buses and cars on the road. You can also see many bikes because more people go out by bike. Why? There are many reasons (原因). First, it is very cheap to buy a bike. And then I often need to wait for(等待) a bus for half an hour. Finally, when the bus comes, there are so many other buses and cars on the roads, so the bus moves very slowly.

I go to work by bus for about four years. I often arrive at work late and feel tired. One day, a friend of mine says, “I go to work by bike. Why don’t we go to work together?” “My bike is old, I leave it at my home for a long time. And there are so many buses and cars on the roads,” I answer. “Don’t be afraid, if you follow me and we ride slowly, you’ll be fine.” he says.

Later, I buy a new bike. We ride slowly, but we arrive at work quickly. It takes me about 40 minutes to go to work by bus, but only half an hour by bike! Now I love riding a bike. And I feel healthy. Many people think my idea is good and maybe you can see more bikes on the roads in London.

①That future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen. Definitely in ten years…and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle(车辆).

②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. Not only is it fun to fly, but “there would never be traffic again, because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy,” he says.

③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come? There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground beneath. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make them self-flying—no human pilot required.

④Another problem is space. Most aircraft need long runways to take off and land. Lifting straight up and down like a helicopter solves this problem. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports, for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be tricky, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.

⑤What do you think? Would you enjoy riding to school or to visit a friend in a self-flying taxi? Are flying cars a good idea, or should we find other ways to get around in the near future?

Don’t want to miss the train? Here are some steps to follow!

★Enter the railway station. There are X-ray machines at the gate of each railway station. All the luggage (行李) has to be passed through to examine for dangerous things. Once you put your luggage on the machine, please go to the other side and get it quickly in case that your luggage is taken either by mistake or on purpose.

★Find the right waiting room. After you enter the railway station, you should find the hall where your train is going to leave from. There are always electronic boards at the railway station with information shown in Chinese. You can find your waiting room according to the information given on your train ticket, or you can ask a member of staff (工作人员) for help if you are in trouble with Chinese.

★Get onto the platform (月台). In most cases, check-in starts 30 minutes before the train leaves if it is the starting station. So you are advised to arrive at the station one hour early. If it is not a starting station, check in starts when the train arrives, then you just need to be 30 minutes early. You will be informed by radio then. Remember to take all your luggage!

★Board the train. The train number and the carriage (车厢) number are shown outside the train clearly; So it is easy to find your carriage. There is a member of staff at the door of each carriage to whom you are required to show your ticket. If you board on the wrong carriage, he/she will guide you to the right one.
