Friendship between animals sometimes seems stronger than that between men.

In France, a man had to move to a new job two hundred kilometers away. He had a dog and a cat, and he loved them both. But he thought that the cat would like to stay in the same house with new owners. So he moved and took only the dog.

About three weeks later, the dog was suddenly lost. For several days, the man looked for his dog, but didn’t find him. Then, seven weeks later, the dog came back but he was not alone. By his side was the cat. They were tired and hungry after their long trip. And they never left each other again.

Another story is about goldfish. We usually think fish are cold-hearted, but sometimes we may be wrong. A friend had to work in another country. So I took her pet goldfish and put it in a bowl with mine. They two lived together for six months. When the friend came back, she took her fish home.

Then, I found my goldfish was acting strangely, hitting against the side of the bowl. The next morning he died. Later that day, my friend phoned to say that her goldfish was also dead. I believe they died of sadness.

①“I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking? Though we cannot see, or hear, or feel our thoughts, they have great power (力量)!

②Isaac Newton was seated in his garden on a summer evening when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think, and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how the earth, sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places.

③James Ferguson once saw the inside of his father’s watch, and he wondered, “Why should I not make a watch?” This set him thinking and it led to a wooden clock which kept good time.

④Walt Disney, the famous American film-maker, was often thinking of new ideas. One day, when he was in a meeting, he suddenly stopped talking, deep in thought. He looked and looked at a place high up in the room. This continued for a long time, and then he got an idea for a new cartoon.

⑤Ideas come at any time, and the important thing is to think. When you meet with any difficulty, don’t lose heart. Try to think of it before asking someone to help you. Think and by thinking you will learn how to think creatively.

We were going to have the mid-term exam soon. And we all felt very nervous. Mrs. Jackson, our science teacher, knew that and she decided to do something. 【小题1】   As she raised the glass of water, everyone expected that she would ask us the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” question. However, to our surprise, Mrs. Jackson asked “【小题2】” we shouted out different answers.

Then, Mrs. Jackson said: “In my opinion, it all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s light. 【小题3】 If I hold it for an hour, my arm will ache so much that it will feel completely numb (麻木的). In the end, I may drop the glass to the floor although I don’t want to. As you can see, the weight of the glass never changes. 【小题4】”    

We all nodded (点头). Mrs. Jackson continued, “Your stress and worries in life are very much like this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing will happen. 【小题5】 Think about them all the time and you won’t be able to do anything else until you drop them. So, everyone, learn to let go of your stress and worries.”
