Toucans (巨嘴鸟), a colorful bird. Take a look at these facts about toucans, and you may learn something you didn’t know before.
Where do they live?
Toucans can be found in the tropical (热带的) forests of South America. Their home is still in danger. The government asks people not to buy rainforest wood. It’s important to protect the habitat (栖息地) of toucans.
What do they look like?
Toucans have a black body and a white neck. The colorful beak is about 8 inches long. It makes up 1/3 of the bird’s total length. It may look pretty big, but thankfully, for the toucan, the beak is not too heavy. It is made of keratin (角蛋白), which makes it much lighter than you would think just by looking.
What do they eat and drink?
Toucans use their beaks to eat different kinds of fruits, which happens to be the kind of food they eat most often. Sometimes toucans will choose to snack on insects, frogs, and the eggs of their birds. Toucans get most of their water from the fruit they eat, so they don’t need to drink too much water.
Believe it or not!
Toucans can be rather lazy birds and they like to stay in one place generally. They don’t fly high up in the sky or very far away from home. They enjoy staying in trees with their delicious fruit to eat.
Wild cats are the predators of toucans in the rainforest. Other predators include larger birds. Some snakes may attack smaller toucans but typically are more interested in the toucans’ eggs instead.

Animals are important to us and they are our friends. But some of them are in great danger now. What can we do to help save them?
Don’t eat wild animals’ meat. Some of us like to eat meat. But do you know some meat comes from endangered(濒危的) animals? To save animals, don’t eat their meat. And it’s healthy for us, too.
Don’t wear clothes made of fur(毛皮). Sometimes people kill animals for fur. If we don’t buy clothes made of fur, people will not kill animals.
Please give away money to Animal Helpers. The group does everything to help save animals. But it often needs money. So save some money and give it away to the group to help animals.
Tell people that it’s important to save animals. Not all people know animals are our friends and that we must save them. So why not tell people around us that it’s important to save animals?
Do you have any other good ways to help save animals? Write to tell us.

A squirrel that was nearly killed nine years ago continues to visit the family that saved, raised and later sent her into the wild.
In October 2009,a four-week-old squirrel was almost killed by an owl(猫头鹰). Luckily, a wildlife group saved her and left her in the care of Brantley Harrison and her family in South Carolina. The Harrisons often look after wild animals and later send them back into the wild.
The Harrisons named her Belle. With three other squirrels,Belle stayed in Brantley's care until spring. During her stay,Belle acted similarly to the other squirrels. In April 2010,the squirrels were sent back into the wild. Belle, however, wasn't ready to leave her human family. Within days of being sent into the wild, she started visiting them, looking for treats. Brantley said that the other squirrels also came back over the first few days, but within a week they stopped coming by and began to avoid people.
"Belle usually sits at the front door, waiting for someone to notice her. She comes almost every day," said Brantley. Her husband John often brings Belle nuts as she is usually waiting by the door for him. Actually,Belle has become a member of the family.
For nine years, she continues to visit them. Brantley said,"If Belle can teach at least one person to care for all living things, no matter how big or how small, then we have done what we have set out to."

Howes was spending a day at the Ocean Beach in New Zealand. His daughter Niccy and her two friends, Helen and Karina, were with him. They were swimming over 300 feet out to sea when they saw six dolphins (海豚) coming to them.
“We couldn’t believe our eyes,” Mr. Howes said. “They kept moving in a circle and we didn’t know why.” Then, one dolphin swam to Mr. Howes and Helen, who were about 65 feet away from the other two. It pushed Mr. Howes and Helen a lot. Mr. Howes felt that the dolphin wanted to bring them together.
“Suddenly I saw another fish swimming to me and Helen,” said Mr. Howes. “It was in fact a great white shark (鲨鱼). It was only about 15 feet away from us,” he said. Then he knew what the dolphins were doing! They were trying to save them from the shark. The shark then went to the other two girls. Mr. Howes was really scared. One of the girls was his daughter.
The dolphins pushed the four swimmers back together and placed themselves between the swimmers and the shark. About 40 minutes later, the shark finally lost interest and swam away. The four swimmers were finally out of danger.
