“Everything happens for the best (一切都会变好的), ” my mother said, whenever things weren’t going my way. “Don’t worry. One day your luck will change.”

After I had finished my college education, I discovered that Mother was right.

I had decided to try for a job in radio. I wanted to host a sports program. I went to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station. But I got turned down every time. In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience, “Get some work in a small station and work your way up, ” she said.

I went back home. I couldn’t get a job there, either, I felt really down. “Your luck will change,” Mom said to me. I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner told me he had already had someone.

As I left his office, I asked, “How can someone be a sports announcer (播音员) if he can’t get a job in a radio station? I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man said, “What did you mean? Do you know anything about football? ” He put me in front of a microphone (麦克风) and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game.

I succeeded!

On my way home, Mom’s words came back to me, “One day your luck will change, Son. And when it happens, you’ll feel doubly (加倍地) good because of all the hard work you’ve done.” At that moment I know just what she meant.

“What’s the matter, Mom?” When I came back home from school yesterday, I found that my mother was upset. 【小题1】

“She’s dying,” Mom said. I knew what she meant. The tulip (郁金香), my mom’s favorite, was dying.

A month ago, we moved into our new house. 【小题2】 When she was free, she would sit in her chair beside the tulip and enjoyed its beautiful color and nice smell.

【小题3】 She put the tulip by the window and moved it from one place to another to give the tulip enough sunshine. Every morning after she got up, the first thing she did was to water the tulip. 【小题4】 She hoped the tulip would become more beautiful and stronger with her great care. But the tulip was dying. She didn’t realize she had given too much to it.

It’s true that Mom loved the tulip. 【小题5】 Instead, it can sometimes be bad and even kill what you love.

Integrity（正直诚实）will be the most important to people who are hoping to be truly successful in their personal or business lives.   The path to doing this will include not only willpower（意志力）【小题1】

Integrity means a good quality of being honest and strong about what you believe to be right. However, carrying out the rule in public is easy. 【小题2】 People will sometimes seem to do amazing thing. but would they still do so without reward?

I recently watched a program about drug（药物）cheating（作弊） in sport. They carried out a study where they said to Olympic athletes if we could give you a drug that could make you win but wasn’t easy to be found, would you take it? Most said yes, even with the warning that you would die five years later. So their training integrity was beaten by the need to be seen as the best whatever the cost.

So if you work in an office, do you work just as hard when alone? Or if on a diet do you eat some chocolate when no one is around? But does it matter if only you know? Well yes, that’s Integrity! 【小题3】 What’s going on here is that you can achieve your dream easily if you are willing to cut comers（偷工减料）but if this does harm to yourself and others, your human side will hopefully call to you to do the right thing. 【小题4】 After all, money, fame and power are attractive.

The key to developing integrity is to take a step back in a certain situation to make sure you feel you are doing the right thing, not cheating yourself or others.
