Do you have to wear uniforms to school every day? Do you like them or you just want to wear your own clothes? Many students just wonder why they can't wear whatever they like, for teenagers want to be different from others.

In fact, there are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea. First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular (特别的)group. When every student in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion. Everybody wears the same style of clothes. Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways. A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge (边缘)of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth which gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or cycling to school on dark mornings, car drivers can easily see them.

But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer to this question is not clear. One study in America found that students5 grades improved a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn't want to wear the uniform. Other American studies showed that uniforms have nothing to do with the school performance.

School uniforms are traditional in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them. Students of some very good schools do not have to wear uniforms now. However, uniforms are still popular. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

Recently there are about 55,000 children who don’t go to school each day in England. According to the law(法律), all children between five and sixteen must go to school on weekdays, and their parents must make sure of this.
The number of children missing school is increasing. The government is worried, because, according to a research, children who often don't go to school are more likely(可能的)to smoke, drink under age or do some other bad things. Also, it’ s difficult for them to do well in exams. What’s more, it’s harder for them to get a job after they leave school. Since 2002,the police have kept checking town centers where truants(逃学者)often go. These happen twice a year. During each check, a student will be stopped and asked why they are not in school. This will happen even though they are with an adult. The police will stop and question(盘问)children who they think do not have a reason for being out of school. The police are not allowed to catch truants, but they can take them back to school. The police said there were nearly twice more boys playing truant(逃学)than girls.

①You’re doing your homework online for a science class. A question comes out: Do newborn human babies see the world in black and white? You don’t know the answer. Do you guess or search (搜索) online?

②Searching online for the answer may get you a better grade on the homework. But it won’t help you learn. Guessing is a better way to learn, a new study shows.

③Arnold Glass found this by analyzing (分析) the grades on his students’ tests from 2008 to 2017. For many years, students had done best on the exam. But by the late 2010s, many students were doing worse on the exam than on the homework. In 2008, most students performed better on their homework than on the exam. But by 2017, more than half of the students performed this way.

④Glass wondered, “How could it be?” So he thought about it for those years. One big thing was the rise of smart phones. They were not common in 2008. But now almost everyone has one. So it would be easier and faster today to find any homework question online. But students can’t use phones during an exam.

⑤Scientists agree that a better learning way for any student is getting answers on your own. If you find and then copy the right answer, you’re taking the easy way out. And that is wasting an important chance to practice. It may take a few more minutes to think of an answer on your own, and then make sure if it’s right. But that’s the way you’ll learn more.
