There once lived an old man in a nice house. Behind the house there was a big garden. He planted many plants there. He took care of his flowers all the time, watering and fertilizing(施肥) them.

One day a young man went by the garden. He looked at the beautiful flowers, imagining how happy he could be if he lived in such a beautiful place. Then, suddenly he found the old gardener was blind(瞎). He was very ________ about this and asked, “You can’t see these flowers. Why are you busy taking care of them every day?”

The old man smiled and said, “I can tell you some reasons. First, I was a gardener when I was young, and I really like this job. Second, although I can’t see these flowers, I can touch them. Third, I can smell the sweetness of them. As to the last one, that’s you.”

“Me? But you don’t know me,” said the young man.

“Yeah, it’s true that I don’t know you. But I know that flowers are angels(天使) that everybody knows. We enjoy the happiness these flowers have brought us.”

The blind man’s work opened our eyes and pleased our heart, which also made his life happier.

It was just like Beethoven, who became deaf in his later life and wrote many great musical words. Beethoven himself couldn’t hear his wonderful music, but his music has encouraged millions of people to face their difficulties bravely. Isn’t it one kind of happiness?

There was a young man who was in trouble. He went bankrupt (破产) and his wife went away from him. From then on, failure was all that he had seen. Struggling (斗争) with this, he went into the forest alone. There, he met an old man who had lived there for a long time. He shared his story with the old man and asked, “Can you give me one good reason not to give up?”

“Look,” the old man said, “Do you see that fern (蕨类植物) and bamboo there?”

“Yes.” the man answered.

“When I planted the fern and bamboo seeds (种子), I watered them carefully. Within a few days, the fern quickly grew from the land,” the old man went on.

“However, I watered the bamboo seed for years, it still didn’t sprout. But I didn’t give up and continued looking after it. In the fifth year, a small sprout came out of the land. Within six months, the tree grew a hundred feet tall.”

“The little bamboo tree had been growing underground in the past four years, developing a root (根) strong enough for its ground growth in the fifth year. If it hadn’t done this, it would not be so strong. So you know, all the time you were struggling, you were actually growing strong roots.” the old man said. Finally, the man thanked the old man deeply. Then he left the forest with the hope for life.

Sixteen years ago a boy gave me an important gift. It was a smile.
It was the early autumn of my first year at a middle school, and my old school was far away. As a result, no one knew who I was. I was very lonely, and afraid to speak to anyone. Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart broken. I couldn’t talk with anyone about my problems.
Then one day, when my classmates were talking happily with their friends, I was sitting at my desk unhappily as usual. At that moment a boy entered the classroom. I didn’t know who he was. He passed by me and then turned back. He looked at me with a smile.
Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy and warm. That smile changed my life. I started to talk with other students and make friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile has become my best friend now.
One day I asked him why he had smiled, but he couldn’t remember doing so!
It doesn’t matter because all the dark days have gone. I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think it is cloudy, you might always be alone. So smile at the world and it will smile back.
