How much pocket money (零花钱) do you get from your parents each week? Is it growing in recent years?

If it is, then you are luckier than kids in Britain. According to reports, recently (最近) they are getting less and less pocket money. British researchers did a survey of 1,204 children between 8 and 15 years old. They found the average amount (平均数) of pocket money for British kids was about 5.8 pounds a week in 2010. In 2009, it was 6.2 pounds. And in 2003, parents gave their children an average of 5.7 pounds a week. To the researchers’ surprise, they find that boys get more pocket money than girls. Boys get 6.9 pound every week while girls get 6.1 pounds each week.

However, children are not too worried about it. Almost half of them believe they get the right amount. Only 42 percent say they would like to have more pocket money.

Most kids like to compare their pocket money with their friends. In the survey, 37 percent believe their friends get more money than they do.

. That’s a very good habit. 10 percent of the British kids save all their pocket money. 25 percent save at least half. 35 percent say they will save money to buy something they really want. “It is good to develop the habit of saving at a young age,” said Flavia Palacios Uman, one of the researchers, “you may benefit (受益) later in life because your savings will add up over time.”

Do you choose to watch a happy movie or a sad movie when feeling sad or down? I advise you not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be right for you.

Scientists at Ohio State University, the US, have found that sad movies can make people happier. They published (刊登) their study in a magazine called Communication Research.

Scientists asked some college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who were separated (分离的). They died during World War II at the end of the movie. The college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie because the scientists wanted to know about the students’ different feelings, including the feeling of sadness.

The result showed that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed that it was because the movie made the students think about their own lives. Compared with those unlucky lovers in the movie, they thought their life was full of hope.

“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot,” one student wrote.

Silvia, the leader of the study, explained that bad feelings would make people more thoughtful. “Good feelings are usually a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said. “But bad feelings, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. So seeing a sad movie may make you feel bad at first, but that will cause you to think more about your own life and then you will value it more and finally feel much happier.”

In the online world, it’s very common for people to talk to each other with emojis(表情符号). However, do you know that people in different age groups have totally different preferences for choosing their emojis? The result is based on a report shared by WeChat, China’s most popular messaging App in January, 2020.

According to the report, users born in the 2000s like to stay up late at night and cold drinks and desserts are their cup of tea. “Facepalm”, it is the most popular emoji with this age group.

Those born in the 1990s are likely to get out of bed later in the morning compared with other groups. The emoji “face with tears of joy” is their favorite. Also, their reading materials have changed from entertainment and gossip three years ago to the present relationship and lifestyle.

For WeChat users born in the 1980s, their tastes have remained the same, as they are interested in news related to the country and public events. The most commonly used emoji for this age group is “smiling widely”.

Users born in the 1970s use the emoji “smiling face with hand over mouth” a lot and their bedtime usually takes place around 11:30 pm.

The Pacific Ocean (太平洋) is the largest of the world’s four oceans. The Coral Sea (珊瑚海) is in the Pacific Ocean and is home to one of nature’s greatest wonders, the Great Barrier Reef (大堡礁). And the reef is now in danger.

It is the world’s largest coral reef system (系统). That is made up of almost 3, 000 different corals. The reef is home to 400 kinds of coral animals and over 2, 000 kinds of fish. Much of the life in the ocean calls the reef home.

However, global warming (全球变暖) is causing a worse condition in the Great Barrier Reef. Rising ocean temperatures cause coral to give out the algae (海藻). The algae not only live in it, but also are the main food for the coral. Without it, the coral is still alive but is slowly becoming dead.
