Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a special a day to honor our mothers and make them feel special. It is an important day all around the world, even though it started in North America and Europe. Mother’s Day is a time for us to show that we are grateful for what our mothers do for us.

Not all countries celebrate Mother’s Day on the same day, but the most popular day is the second Sunday of May. Most countries choose to use “Mother’s Day”, not “Mothers’ Day”, to show that each family honors their mother, rather than all of the world’s mothers.

Young children get especially excited about Mother’s Day and put a lot of effort into making cards and presents for their mothers. For mothers, it is like having a second birthday.

Mother’s Day in the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, etc. means mothers usually get the day off from housework. It is common for children to cook for their mother so she can have breakfast in bed. She also receives presents, flowers and cards. In America, Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for restaurants, as children take their mothers to lunch or dinner.

Darryl was excited about going to his friend Jessica’s house for Thanksgiving. Then his mom said the word “vegetarian”. “It means they don’t eat meat,” she added.

“This is a potluck. So someone else will bring the turkey?” Darryl asked.

“They asked everyone to bring vegetarian dishes,” his mom said.

“It’s just completely crazy. I’m going to feel hungry!” Darryl cried.

“You might be surprised,” his mom said with a smile.

When they arrived, Jessica introduced them to the other guests. “I decorated (装饰) the dining room and made the salad on my own,” Jessica said. The dining room was fully decorated. On the table sat the biggest bowl of salad Darryl had ever seen. He could see onions, carrots and tomatoes. How much would he have to eat to feel full?

In the living room, some guests were playing board games. So Darryl joined them. When it was time to eat, everyone got into the colorful dining room. There were plates, bowls, and dishes of food on the table. Darryl didn’t know the names of half of them. Darryl tried some sweet potatoes and yams. He even had some of Jessica’s salad and told her how much he loved it.

After the desserts, his mom whispered, “I told you that you’d be surprised.” Darryl opened his mouth to talk but then leant back in his chair. “I’m too full to argue,” he said.

Happiness is for everyone. Maybe some people have beautiful houses with large gardens and big swimming pools. Some other people have nice cars and a lot of money. But you needn’t care about that. Why? Because those are not real happiness.

In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you. When you study hard at your lessons, your parents will always take good care of your life and your health. When you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you. When you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can find that happiness is always around you.

Money is not equal to (等于) happiness. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that you can’t buy with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge (挑战) yourself. Life is like a revolving (旋转) door. When it closes, it also opens.
