I was born and grew up in Northeast China, where the weather is cold and people are fierce. When I was a little kid, I was weak and my face dark. I was often laughed at by other kids. Every time I look back at my childhood, Huayang was the only sunshine on my snowy way to school and the only kindness in my cruel world.

Huayang was the son of one of our neighbors. The handsome guy looked like Andy Lau and was especially charming when smiled. He was two years older than me and acted like an elder brother. From time to time, he stopped the difficult kids from bullying me. I enjoyed going to school with him. We played snowball fight in winter and water gun fight in summer. I enjoyed so much playing with him.

My parents cared little about me. His parents did even less about him. He has a spoiled little sister, an always-in-bed mother and a drunkard father. For many times, I saw his father shout at him or even beat him. Even his little sister told him to do this or that. And he would do it without a word. After graduation from primary school, Huayang had to leave school forever. His father asked him to work to help raise the family.

For many times on my way to and from school, I saw Huayang driving a 3-wheeled tractor, carrying a full load of water to sell. The road was icy and the wind sharp. He had to be very careful. If he spilled out any water, his father would be very angry. Seeing him, my heart got full of sadness. Seeing me, he just waved and smiled, which made me even sadder.

I wonder if he felt the bitterness from life or hatred from fate. But he always showed the world smiling faces. It was he who made me believe that today was not so bad and tomorrow would be good.

Time went by, kids grew up and friends grew separate. I haven’t seen him for over 30 years since I left the Northeast. I don’t know if he takes me as a best friend, but I do. He would never know how much I miss him, and how much I’ve learned from him.
