Dear Jane,

I’m glad that you write to me and ask for advice on how to improve English vocabulary. Here are three pieces of my basic advice.

First, I suggest you read books. After reading for a long time, you can increase your vocabulary quickly because you may meet the same word for many times. Second, you said you are a shy school girl. It is natural that you are afraid of speaking English in front of your teachers or classmates. I advise you to make conversations with your classmates and act them out. Then you’ll become brave.

Third, you can write down five or six new words on a card every day and place it on your desk. You can remember these words any time you like.

I hope my advice can help you.

Yours,

Smith

Do you need a mentor (导师)?

Many teenagers have trouble communicating with their parents because parents always expect them to solve problems by themselves. For many reasons, they can’t easily work them out. They also find it hard to deal with the relationship with their parents. What should they do?

Here comes the way. There are some mentors who can help teenagers to solve the problems. Mentors are not like parents, but they can bring teenagers personal advice and help them grow. Teenagers need to express their own point of view, even if it goes against the mentors. They will feel relaxed because they can talk with mentors freely.

Zhou Ziqian is a student from Sunshine Middle School. He learned a lot from his mentor. “I preferred to have a life journey of my own with my own stories. But my parents didn’t agree. I got much help from my mentor. When I shared my problems, he helped me analyze (分析) them in different ways I couldn’t see. Because of his rich experiences, he could understand me well.” said Zhou, “He made me feel good and also asked me to talk more with my parents?”

A)回答问题

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents. However, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap(弥合代沟).

Don’t argue with your parents. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. Go to somewhere to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. If you don’t think you can speak to them in a good way at that time, try writing a letter.

Try to reach a compromise(和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a new smart phone. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the smart phone, but only use it on weekends.

Talk about your values(价值观). The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them know more about you.

A good relationship with parents can make you a better and happier person. Have a try!
