Is reading better than watching TV? I believe it is. Is reading better than playing video games? I’m not so sure if it is. If learning is important to you, but not necessarily so, and if pleasure is what you want, these activities can be pleasant in their own ways. Reading might be better than many activities if you want to educate yourself and improve your chances of succeeding in your work.

If you’re serious about creating the habit of reading, what’s important is finding a time you can read every day—often that’s early morning or late at night, or both. For others, it might be during their lunch break. You only need to read for 10 to 20 minutes a day to form the habit.

Then, you need to find a place that’s comfortable. Make sure it has good lighting, the temperature is nice and you’re in a good chair. Or you can find some place that you can relax in without falling asleep, although there’s nothing wrong with sleep.

Next, be sure to shut off the TV, Internet, cell phone, radio, or other music, let reading be a quiet time. Mark an “x” on your calendar every day you read, and try to keep your unbroken “x” es going as long as possible. A habit is much easier to get into if it’s something you enjoy, not something you are made to do. So make the time you spend reading a joy. I’ve been a lifelong reader, so the pleasure of a good book is one of my favorite things in the world. I love to lose myself in the world of a book.

Enjoy reading as much as possible

Homework is a problem for students all over the world. As a student, you have lots of homework to do every day. It’s an important part of a student’s schooldays. It’s the best way to review what you have learned in class. And it helps you understand important knowledge. Luckily, there are several things you can do to make homework less difficult.

Be sure you understand the homework

Write your homework down in your notebook if you need to. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about it. It’s much easier to ask the teacher during or after class than to try to remember later that night.

Use your time at school

Many schools have study halls. It allows students to study on their own. It’s more interesting to play with friends. But the more homework you finish at school, the less you’ll have to do that night.

Take a break

It’s difficult to hold your attention for too long. So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you feel very tired. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

Make a plan

If you don’t finish your homework at school, think about how much you have left, so you can budget(预算) your time. Most students have between 1 hour and 3 hours of homework a night. Dear sir,

I’m Susan, a common mother of two kids. My daughter is a middle school student and my son is in a primary school. They are busy with schoolwork every day and don’t have much time for dinner. On weekends, they take some after-school classes. If they have free time, they always play games or watch short videos on the smart phone. I worry about their health a lot. I want to know more ways to help my kids keep healthy. Thanks.

Dear Susan,

We asked some professional (专业的) persons for help. Here is their advice.

Eat healthily. Your children may have their favorite food, but it is important to eat all kinds of food. Try to cook five kinds of fruit and vegetables a day. They will give them enough vitamin and keep them healthy. Of course, eggs and meat are necessary. You can cook them in a healthy way. During teenage years, their body needs energy (能量) from rice and bread.

Spend less time on screen. Many children spend much time watching TV, playing computer games or using smart phones. These three sitting down activities are really bad for their health. And they will make children less creative. You must help them spend less time on screen, no more than thirty minutes a day.

Exercise wisely (明智地). Everyone knows锻炼有利于身心健康。But not everyone loves running, playing basketball or soccer. You need to find what activities your children like most in their free time. Maybe their favorite is swimming, dancing or skating. You can take them to do the enjoyable things when they want to play computer games. It’s best to exercise twice a week. One hour each time is enough.

Change toothbrushes (换牙刷). Few people care about their teeth. Having good teeth is good for our health. I believe your children use toothbrushes every day. Do you often change their toothbrushes? You may think it is not necessary. A study shows old toothbrushes bring illness. You should change their toothbrushes once a month.

With the ever increasing popularity of online shopping, users’ reviews(评价)are becoming more and more important. Since you can’t actually touch, smell or hear the product you’re buying online, these reviews provide buyers valuable information on the product itself. But how reliable(可信的)are they?

Bamaby Bicken took some friends to a restaurant in Manchester that had excellent reviews on a food website. However, she found the service was awful. “We were ignored(被忽略)most of the time. Later, I wrote a review on the same site only to be told that the review site owner would not accept any bad reviews — only the good ones.”

So, how can you get a useful review? Web expert Hilary Saunders has a few top tips. “If there are only a few reviews of a place, it is quite possible that they have been posted by friends or enemies. If there are many reviews, watch out for the reviews that are almost the same in style and are placed at about the same time, even though they are from people with different usernames. The best thing is to look for reviewers who seem to be familiar with the product they are reviewing.

Although some companies still offer gift voucher(礼券)to anyone who would give their product a five-star review, some are stepping in because they think it’s their duty to build an objective(客观的)image of their product, “Amazon works hard to keep the completeness of its customer reviews, ” said a spokesperson for the company. “We have very clear guidelines, and when a customer reports a review that he feels is inappropriate (不恰当的), we check, and may take it down. ”

So next time you see that five-star review for something you want to buy, be careful—it could be the work of a false reviewer!

When shopping online, buyers get valuable information from users’ reviews. But can we 【小题1】 them?
