The whale is the largest animals in the world. It is so large that perhaps you have never seen a room big enough to hold one.

It is commonly called a fish, but the scientists say that it is not a fish, for it breathes air as we do. As it does not live on land, it does not need legs to walk with. It swims in the sea with the help of its tail and fins. There are two kinds of whales. One kind has a big mouth with teeth. Its mouth is four meters deep. It can eat other large sea animals. This kind is called a killer whale. The other kind of whale is much larger than the killer whale. It has no teeth. It has rows of bones in its mouth. Small sea life is caught in these bones. These whales also have a very small throat. They cannot eat anything larger than an apple.

Men go in ships to those parts of the world where whales are found, and kill them with iron spears, called harpoons. But it is very dangerous work, for a whale often turns over a boat with a blow of its tail. When the whale dead, the sailors put its fat, called blubber, into bottles, bring it home and make it into oil. Whalebone, which comes from its upper jaw, is used for making umbrellas, and many other things, and part of one kind of whale, called the Sperm Whale, is used for making candles.

Does it make you mad to think that your children might grow up in a world without whales? What can you do? Surely it’s time for the government and everyone of us to stand up to save the whales.

A swan

A retired postman from Turkey and a beautiful white swan have been always together for nearly forty years, and the story of their friendship has warmed the hearts of millions.

In 1984 Recep Mirzan was in a car with a group of friends, when he saw a swan that appeared to have a broken wing in an empty field.

Mirzan quickly realized that leaving the bird there was the same as signing its death sentence, as meat-eating animals would have most likely eaten it, so he stopped the car and took the bird with him. He kept it in the car until evening, when he took it home and started nursing it back to health.

“Since I love animals, I said to myself that I should take her home instead of leaving her as dinner to foxes,” Mirzan said, “We got used to each other. We never separated.”

Even after the swan’s broken wing healed (痊愈), it didn’t try to fly away. Instead, it acted as a friend to the other animals on Recep’s farm, and decided to stick around. Recep named her Garip and now she has been with him ever since.

“She comes when I call. Since 1984, she has never left me, not even during the river floods,” the retired postman said. “She used to be stronger, but she has grown old now. If she dies, I will make her a nice grave (墓穴) here, but I hope we live more together.”

During the day, she is busy following her human friend around, either during his daily chores, or on his evening walks.

After his wife died a few years ago, Recep Mirzan started spending more time with his animals, and since he has no human children, he regards Garip as his child.

The Cat Loves Being Outside

Simon, a 6-year-old black cat, loves doing outdoor activities, such as mountain climbing, biking and even skiing. When he does these activities all over the world, his human friend Yosh, an adventurer (冒险家) is always by his side.

Yosh is Simon’s owner. He adopted (收养) the black cat in 2016. He brought Simon home and took care of him. Instead of making Simon a house cat, Yosh had big plans. He wanted the cat to enjoy the beauty of nature. So Yosh started to take Simon to go outside with him.

Surprisingly, Yosh found that Simon loved being outside. Then he decided to train Simon to be an adventure cat and experience the outdoor safely.

The two went to many places. For Yosh, going outside with Simon for activities was the best way to protect his pet.

“In a lot of ways, he does feel like my kid,” Yosh says. He hopes to encourage (鼓励) more people to take their cats outside. “I want people to know cats can be just as active as dogs if they get good training,” Yosh said.
