What’s the most enjoyable school activity among American students? The answer is the school dance. Most American high schools have two dances during the year, one in winter and the other in spring. At the dance, most schools make some strict rules to help create a healthy and enjoyable evening for all students. Only the students under 21 years are allowed in most schools. Some schools will even give the students a safety check before they come into the dance area. Some schools ask their students to keep a standing position (姿势) when they are dancing. Jazz is a type of music. Some people say that jazz is America's only true art form. That's because it began here. Hundreds of years ago, black people worked as slaves (奴隶) and made up songs to pass the time. It wasn't called jazz then, but the way the slaves were playing and singing music was special.
The music of America's black people began to be called jazz in the early 1900s.

Washington DC is a very important place in the history of jazz. It has a famous jazz piano player: Duke Ellington.
Born in Washington in 1899, Ellington as a child wanted to play baseball instead of the piano. But his parents played the piano, so he started playing the piano when he was seven years old.
In 1920, he played small shows at the Howard Theatre. When he was 24, he moved to New York, but he didn't forget his hometown. He called his band the Washingtonians and later he returned to perform at the Lincoln Theatre.

No one knows exactly when jazz was invented, or by whom. But it is said that it began in the early 1900s. Jazz was a new kind of music, for America and the world. Who were the jazz pioneers? Most were blacks. Soon the popularity of this kind of music spread. In the 1900s, there were many jazz musicians, both black and white. Many of them were famous. One man was better than the rest. His name was Louis Armstrong.

Louis Armstrong was born in 1901 in New Orleans. He had talents for music and was very hard-working. He also had a good sense of humor. These personal qualities were valuable in his rise to fame. After he became famous, he traveled around the world. It seemed that everyone wanted to hear Louis play. But in his early life, he lived a hard life. During that period, his life could hardly be imagined. But Louis smiled through everything. His attitude to life was inspiring. For him, life was there and he just accepted it. He once said, “My whole life has been filled with happiness. Whatever happened has been beautiful to me. I love everybody.”
