Bob Miller was a woodcutter and he started a new job at a timber (木材) company. The pay and work conditions were quite good. In return, Bob worked as hard as he could.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him where he was supposed to work. On his first day, Bob cut down 18 trees. “Congratulations,” his boss said. “Keep going!”

Encouraged by his boss’ words, Bob worked even harder the next day, but could only cut down 15 trees. The third day, he tried even harder, but only cut down 10 trees. Day after day, he was cutting down fewer and fewer trees.

“I must be losing my strength.” Bob thought. Since the boss was treating him well, he felt really sorry and guilty. He went to his boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.

“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” his boss asked.

“Sharpen? I have no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut down trees.”

Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time to sharpen our “axe”. In today’s world, it seems that everyone is busier than ever, but also less happy than ever.

Why is this? There’s nothing wrong with activity and hard work. Probably it is because we have forgotten how to stay “sharp”. We have forgotten to continuously improve our skills so we lose our efficiency(效率). Then we leave ourselves in a busy state and become stressed. We will feel less happy.

So remember, it’s worth taking time to sharpen your skills. As the saying goes, “More preparation may quicken the speed in doing work.”

A group of students got together to visit their old university professor. They talked about their troubles in work and life. After the professor had offered his guests a drink he went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and some cups—porcelain(瓷的),plastic(塑料的), glass, crystal(水晶的), some plain looking, some beautiful and some expensive. The professor told them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all his students had a cup in hand,he said:“I don't know if you have noticed, but when all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, the plain and cheap ones were left behind. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source(根源) of your problems and stress.”
“What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you went for the best cups and were eyeing each other's cups to see if they were better.”
Life is the coffee, and the jobs, money and title(头衔) are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and do not change the quality of life. Sometimes,_by_concentrating_only_on_the_cup,_we_fail_to_enjoy_the_coffee. So, don't let the cups drive you. Enjoy the coffee instead.

This story is about Mrs. Jones, an 82-year-old lady. Although her life was hard, she was always nicely dressed every day. This morning Mrs Jones was moving to the nursing home. The nursing home was very busy. After hours of waiting, Mrs Jones still smiled sweetly when she was told that her room was ready.(1)在去她房间的路上,我告诉她房间是什么样子的。

Suddenly she said, “I love it!”

“But Mrs Jones, you haven’t seen the room yet!” I was surprised at her reply. She stopped and said, “Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is placed. (2) It depends on how I decide to think about the room. I have already decided to love the room before I actually see it.”

Then she continued, “I have a choice. I can spend the day in bed and consider how tiny my room is. Or I can just get out of bed and be thankful that I can still enjoy a new day. Each day is a gift. (3) I’ll enjoy my life and all the happy memories. I have stored them in my bank account (账户) before.”

After an accident washed up Marina Murphy’s career as a dancer, she wanted to try something different. She set her sights on going to America from Ireland. Marina believed that she would have chances there and could do something she wanted.

Full of hope, Marina packed her things, said goodbye and set sail for the United States. Along the way, Marina pictured herself becoming famous in Hollywood as a movie star. She imagined living a better life.

Shortly after Marina arrived, she did everything she could to make a living. She spent very little money and worked several part-time jobs. She pursued (追求) acting as well but she was refused many times. With so much failure, Marina’s dream became hopeless. She wondered if she had made a big mistake.

One day, Marina sat on a park bench crying. Her situation was nothing like her dreams. She had a feeling that she wouldn’t be able to build a good life. An elderly man sitting nearby asked Marina if she was OK. Too sad to care, Marina shared her life with the stranger.

“Don’t jump ship yet. Give yourself more time to see if you will sink (下沉)or swim. I believe that things will get better,” he said with a kind smile. She thought about his words and then thanked him. That old man was right. She needed to accept both the bad and the good.

Marina tried hard to test the waters for a year. In that year, Marina surprised herself by taking to life in America like a duck to water.
