Nobody lives in the house next to Betsy for six months, and one day someone goes in. Betsy just sees an old woman in a wheelchair. Betsy thinks she is lonely by herself. “I’ll go over to say hello to our new neighbour tomorrow morning,” Betsy tells her mother.

Next morning they bring some sweets to their new neighbour. The lady comes to the door and says her name is Emily Harris. She asks them to come into the house. Betsy and her mom stay only for a short time. Betsy’s mom says, “If you need any help, let us know.”

After breakfast next day, Betsy wants to see if Miss Harris needs any help. It is Saturday, so she has time all day. Betsy knocks at the door but doesn’t get an answer. The door is unlocked (没锁), so Betsy opens it and sees Miss Harris lying on the floor. “I think I break my arm,” says Miss Harris.

Betsy runs home quickly and tells her mom. Then they take Miss Harris to the hospital. When Miss Harris is in hospital, Betsy cleans Miss Harris’s rooms.

“I’m so lucky to have this house next to you!” says Miss Harris.

Betsy smiles and says, “Welcome to our neighbourhood.”

Jack is in Grade Three now. He is a polite boy and studies hard. He is good at his lessons and can answer all the questions in class. His teachers and classmates like him except(除了) Henry. They’re deskmates, but Henry likes playing and often fails in the exams. His father has a dental clinic(牙科诊所) and gets a lot of money. The boy thinks he lives in the richest family in the town. So he looks down upon(看不起) others and often laughs at them. Of course he has few friends

Jack is busy all the time. His father is a shoe-maker. The man has to work hard but he can’t buy enough food for family. He tells Jack to help him after school. So the boy has to do all his homework at school. He’s ready to do so.

One summer afternoon, on his way home, Jack met his sister Lily.

The girl carried a heavy box in her arms without wearing shoes. Jack carried it for her. Henry saw her and said, “Your father is a shoe-maker, but your sister has no shoes!”

“I don’t think it’s strange,” Jack answered. “Your father is a dentist(牙医), but your sister has no teeth when she was born!”

Mike is a factory worker. He is often very tired after a day’s work. His wife, Jenny, has no job, so she stays at home to cook the meals. Every day he can have his dinner when he gets home from his factory.

One day, Mike came home very late because he was very busy in the factory. He was very hungry when he got home.

He was not happy when he found his dinner was not ready. He was very angry with his wife. He shouted at her, “I’m going out to eat in a restaurant.” “Wait for five minutes.” said his wife. “Why? Do you think that the dinner will be ready in five minutes?”asked Mike.

“Of course not,” she answered, “But I can be ready to go with you in five minutes.”
