Hello, everybody! I'm Dang Gui, a student from Taiwan, China. Just a month ago, I had an unusual experience. As the news reported, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake happened in Hualian County, where I lived with my family. It’s the strongest one in 25 years. It’s reported that the earthquake has caused 10 dead, 1099 injured (受伤), and 15 missing, up to 10:00 a.m., April 5th.

I still remember the time when the earthquake happened. It was 7:58 a.m. on Wednesday April 3rd. At that time, I was preparing for my school things. Mom was doing the dishes in the kitchen. Dad was cleaning the room. Suddenly, the earthquake happened. The building was shaking, as well as the lights, and the furniture (家具) in it. People were shouting in fear and trying to get out of the house. I felt very scared. Mom and dad ran to me. And we stayed together in a safe corner of the house.

Followed by many aftershocks (余震), finally, the earthquake ended. We felt very lucky to be safe and sound.

After the earthquake, everyone in the neighborhood came out to help. The whole country offered us with great love, care and support. I think the earthquake brought us closer.

Recently whenever I turned on my computer or my mobile phone, news about the great effect of Hurricane Harvey on thousands of people caught my eyes. We saw many unfortunate events. However, there were also the bright news that confirmed the goodness of mankind. As a journalist, I wrote many human interesting stories during my career. That’s why the story about the guys in the bakery caught my eyes.

When the staff at a Mexican bakery chain in Houston were trapped inside the building for two days, they didn’t sit there feeling sorry for themselves. They used their time wisely after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. While they were waiting for the eventual rescue that came on Monday morning, four decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for their community.

The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread. Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people. By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.

The store manager, Brian Alvarado, told The Independent, ”Whenever a disaster occurs, nobody should just feel forlorn. Instead, we should take positive action to save ourselves and help others. Our acts of kindness will make a big difference.”

Jason and his father were driving to the supermarket. It was an unusual day. The sky was dark but there were few clouds. As they drove up the street, they heard a loud sound.

Jason’s father realized that a tornado (龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out at once. They tried to work their way to the nearest building. The wind was very strong, and it was hard to see or hear. Debris (碎片) was falling all over the place. Jason couldn’t see his dad anymore. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.

Jason didn’t dare to keep going. He crouched (蹲) down on the street. His heart was beating quickly, and he was nervous. He had never been in a tornado before.

After a while, the wind died down and the loud sound was gone. Jason slowly lifted his head and looked around. The street was in a terrible mess. And there was nobody on it. Jason stood up and walked to the building with shaky (颤抖的) legs. Once there, he pushed the door open. There were lots of people in it, and everyone was being very noisy. Jason walked into the hall and suddenly he saw his dad walking towards him!

“Jason! There you are! Are you OK? I’ve been so worried about you!” said his father, giving him a big hug. “I couldn’t find you anywhere!”

In his dad’s arms, Jason breathed a sigh of relief (松了一口气) and said, “I’m glad we’re safe, Dad. I love you!”
