What’s the normal body temperature? Well, if your answer is 37°C, you are wrong. It turns out that the normal body temperature has dropped in the past 150 years, according to a new study.

“What everyone grew up learning, which is that our normal body temperature is 37°C, is wrong,” said Julie Parsonnet, a famous doctor. She and her team looked at medical data from three different time periods: 1862 to 1930, 1971 to 1975, and 2007 to 2017. Comparing the data, they found that body temperatures had become lower by about 0.02°C every ten years. So what’s the new normal temperature? It’s 36.6°C, says the study.

As for the reason, one possibility is that living in temperature controlled buildings has changed people’s bodies. They don’t need to work hard to keep a normal temperature. Another is less inflammation (炎症) in people’s bodies. Inflammation causes people’s bodies to use more energy, which increases the body temperature. Development in medical treatments and improved levels of living have led to less inflammation across the population compared to 200 years ago.

A study in the 1990s found that women had a warmer internal temperature but colder hand and foot temperatures. Women’s body temperatures were on normal 0.23 degrees higher than those of men (36.56°C vs 36.33°C), while men had higher normal hand and foot temperatures (32.22°C vs 30.67°C).

What’s more, a woman’s body responds differently to changes in environmental temperatures. Studies have shown that as the temperature drops, women have a stronger response. Their blood moves more slowly than men’s. This leaves their skins more sensitive (敏感的), especially on their hands and feet, since it’s blood moving that maintains hand and foot temperatures.

The human body may have changed over the past 150 years, but one thing that has remained unchanging is the disagreement between men and women about what temperature is comfortable.

Are you nearsighted? If you are, your parents might have tried to do something to fix it, such as having you get an eye massage (按摩), take medicine or even get surgery. People who offer these services or products often claim that they can reduce or even cure myopia (治愈近视).

However, you will no longer see advertisements like this before long. The government has issued a notice targeting advertisements that make these claims. Specifically, the notice bans (禁止) businesses from using words like “recovery” and “myopia cure” in their advertisements, People’s Daily reported.

The notice says that myopia cannot be completely cured with current medical technology. Therefore, these advertisements could mislead children and their parents.

Young people can prevent and control myopia by spending more time outside and less time in front of books or computers. People who have vision problems should go to a hospital and let a doctor decide what to do.

More than 450 million Chinese were suffering from myopia as of June 2018, Xinhua News Agency reported. Myopia rates are around 30 percent for primary school students, 60 percent for junior high students and 80 percent for senior high students. This is likely because students spend a lot of time reading books and using electronic devices (电子产品).

To reduce myopia among young people, the government made a new plan last August. The plan is designed to limit the amount of time children spend playing video games, as well as limit the production of new video games, according to China Daily.
