Many people choose to go to the movie theater on weekends. It’s really a good place for people to relax after a week’s hard work. But do you know the following things about movies and movie theaters?

At first, movies were all very short, sometimes only a few minutes or shorter. The contents (内容) were different from those of today’s movies too. They were mainly about special activities and important things. Later, movies become longer and storytelling. Movies were not shown with sound until the early 1930s and by mid-1930s, some were in full color.
It’s said that Nickelodeon was the first movie theater in the world and it had 96 seats. The theater got its name from the price of its ticket and the Greek word (希腊语) for theater. It took people a nickel (5分镍币) to get in.
Over the past few years, movie theaters have developed (发展) very fast. Now, people can watch movies in a more comfortable way.

I sometimes find that watching a film adaptation (改编) of a book helps me to understand a book. This is especially true for books from a different period or with a difficult dialect (方言).
My favourite examples of these include Pride and Prejudice, which is also my favourite book, and Trainspotting, which is written in Scottish dialect.
Film and TV adaptations of books also mean that books reach a wider audience(观众). If people really like the film, they will be encouraged to read the book. As for language learning, watching film or TV adaptations of books can help to provide an understanding of a story. They also help to give a story a more modern adaptation. For example, Oliver is a good adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The language in the book can be enough to make a native speaker moved, but the adaptation means that everyone can enjoy the story of the orphan Oliver.
Similarly, the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet, an adaptation of the Shakespeare play of the same name, makes those of us who haven’t studied Shakespeare still enjoy his play in a more interesting and understandable way.
Of course, there are limitations (局限) and not every story that is translated onto the screen is liked by fans of the book, or even the writer. For example, as a writer, P. L. Travers hated Disney’s adaptation of her own book Mary Poppins, but it’s now a well-loved film. For me, I dislike the adaptation of Still Alice by Lisa Genova and her group. They changed the location from Boston to New York for no real reason, which for some readers changes the whole feel of the book.
Anyway, adaptations are a great way to introduce yourself to the story and characters of a book before reading it. They’re also a good way for people who may not feel confident enough to read a whole novel in a different language, but still want to know the story.

Did you walk into the cinema on National Day and watch the movie Changjin Lake(长津湖)? It’s about how the new China helped North Korea to push back the American soldiers(士兵). It is not only the movie itself that makes people touch, but the heroes of the war who fought for our country and the people.

Let’s take a close look at the real-life history behind the movie. Changjin Lake is in North Korea. The Battle(战役)of Lake Changjin was in a very cold winter with temperatures(气温)of around -40°C. In the 1950s, our Chinese soldiers had to face life-and-death problems when they got on the train to enter the DPRK. A US enemy plane bombed(轰炸)the trains, and the soldiers had to quickly moved into the mountains and forests to hide. I still deeply remember a picture in the movie. In order not to expose the target(暴露目标), they stayed in the ice and snow without any moving. Although the follow-up troops(后续部队)killed the enemy and won the battle, unluckily 125 soldiers were frozen(冻)to death. This is a movie about war and people. Many can’t help crying after watching this movie, because our Chinese soldiers used their lives to guard(保卫)the country and the people.

It is the loveliest persons who guarded China’s great rivers and mountains. However, many of them never have the chance to see the beautiful mountains and rivers again. The movie Changjin Lake wants to tell as today’s young people:though we live in an age without war, we should never forget the true heroes in the history and we need to pass on their great spirit!
