When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish, doing some cooking and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was richer than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
This is the finding of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home or community got abilities and came to feel they were important members of society, ” said Daniel Brown, the expert who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Brown’s study followed these children in great detail(详情). Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Brown’s research group compared the children’s mental-health(心理健康)scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were given for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility(责任), independence, confidence and competence—the basics of emotional(情绪的)health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The most competent(有能力的)adults are those who know how to do this.
Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live wonderfully in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

A salt seller used to carry big bags of salt on his donkey’s back as he made his way to the market every day.
On the way there, they had to cross a river. One day, the donkey took a sudden fall into the river. The big bags of salt also fell into the water. The salt seller didn’t notice, but some of the salt dissolved( 溶解) in the water, making the bags much lighter to carry. The donkey realized this and felt much more comfortable on his way to the market.
The next day, the donkey did the same thing, except this time, he fell in the water on purpose. Again, the bags were lighter and easier to carry.
The salt seller soon found out what was going on and decided to teach his donkey a lesson. The next day, he put two big bags of cotton on the donkey’s back. Again the donkey played the same trick, hoping that the bags would become even lighter.
But the cotton that tell into the water instead became very heavy to carry. The donkey learned a lesion and didn’t play this trick any more after that day.
Sometimes, we might feel tempted (有诱惑力的) to take shortcuts (捷径) or cheat when we have a lot of hard work to do. However, taking shortcuts and cheating will often come back to harm us later. It is better to simply work honestly.

“Help me!” he cried out.
“Help me!” a voice shouted back.
The boy was very surprised. “Who are you?” he shouted.
“Who are you?” the voice shouted back.
“You are a fool!” he said.
“You are a fool!” the voice came back.
At that moment, his father got to him. “Someone is talking to me but I can’t see who he is,” the boy said to his father.
“Son, that is called an echo(回音),” his father said. “But really, it’s called life.”
“You are a winner!” the father cried.
“You are a winner!” the voice answered.
“You are talented!” the father shouted.
“You are talented!” it came back.
“Son, that’s how life is. Whatever you do, it always comes back to you,” the father said. “The question is: what are you sending out about? Please start sending out: ‘I am strong, I am talented, and I am the best.’ What you send out is going to come back to you.”
If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. Life will give you back everything you have given to it.
