Have you ever lied to someone? Students share their stories about this topic.

Student A: I tell lies sometimes because I don’t want to be criticized (指责). For example, I didn’t do well on an exam once. In order not to let my parents down, I told them I didn’t have any exams, so they didn’t scold (责备) me.

Student B: Because of vanity (虚荣), I lied once. I was on duty one day, but I was late, so I didn’t finish my work. When the teacher asked us whether anyone was late, in order to keep a good record, I didn’t admit (承认) that I was late.

Student C: I used to lie to my mom. She always told me to have a little nap (午睡) at noon. I told her I couldn’t fall asleep because it was noisy in the classroom, but actually I read novels at that time. I lied because I wanted to have time to do what I wanted, instead of something I don’t like, even though they are good for me.

Student D: I lie because I want to have privacy. I want my parents to give me enough personal space. I remember I went out with some friends one day. In order to make my parents not worry about me, I told them I went to study with some other students, so they wouldn’t ask too many questions.

There’s a lovely girl living next door to me. I don’t often see her play with other kids in the neighborhood. It seems that she’s always busy, even on weekends.

Every time I go out to exercise in the early morning, I always see the light in her bedroom be on. She is a pupil now. She often gets up earlier than me on school days.

“Can she get enough sleep?” I asked her mother one day when they came back home from school.

“We have no choice. She can’t lose at the starting line.” answered the mother.

The girl has to go from lessons to lessons on weekends. Every Saturday morning, her grandmother takes her to the violin lessons. In the afternoons, her father drives her to the Children’s Palace to learn dance. In the evenings she has to do homework till 12:00. Every Sunday morning, she has Cambridge English lessons. She has to go to drawing lessons on Sunday afternoons.

“As a girl, if you can go far in the future, you must have a strong base (基础) from your early age. Then you can be different from others.” her father says.

I feel sorry for the girl.
