Non-natives better at English?

But some experts believe that when it comes to 【小题2】 communicating in English, non-native speakers are actually easier to understand.

“Often you have a room full of people from different countries communicating in English and all understanding each other. And then 【小题3】 the American or British person walks into the room and nobody can understand them,” Chia Suan Chong, a UK-based communications culture expert, told the BBC.

Chong said this happens 【小题4】 non-native speakers communicate more carefully.

“English speakers, on the other 【小题5】, often talk too fast, use jokes, slang (俚语) and make references to their country that others might not understand,” Chong said.

【小题6】 an Australian living in China, this is something that I keep in mind when talking to my Chinese coworkers. I’m 【小题7】 to speak slowly and use words I know they will understand. Sometimes, we confuse each other though. Once, I told my coworker, “no dramas”, which is slang for “no problem”. However, she thought I was calling her a drama queen (大惊小怪的人) and got upset.

But don’t worry. Experts say that it’s the native speaker’s 【小题8】 if they can’t understand you, not yours. “English speakers with no other language often lack awareness (意识) of how to speak English internationally,” English language teacher Dale Coulter told the BBC.

The best way to 【小题9】 any trouble might be to ask for some patience. If you find it difficult to understand an English speaker, don’t be afraid to ask them to 【小题10】 down and speak clearly.

“Thank you” is widely 【小题1】 in a modern society. It is a very good manner. You should say “Thank you” 【小题2】 others help you or say something kind to you. For example, when someone 【小题3】 the door for you, when someone says you have done your work well, when someone says you have 【小题4】 a nice shirt, or your city is very beautiful, you should say “Thank you”. It is used not only between friends, 【小题5】 between parents and children, 【小题6】 and sisters, husbands and wives.

“Excuse me” is 【小题7】 short polite usage. We use it the same as “Thank you”. When you hear someone says so behind you, you’ll get to know that somebody wants to walk past 【小题8】 touching you. It is not polite to interrupt (打断) others while they are 【小题9】.

If you want to have a word with one of them, please say “Excuse me” 【小题10】, and then begin to talk. You should also do so when you want to cough or make any unpleasant noise before others. Let’s say “Thank you” and “Excuse me” on the right situation.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is one of the most famous English dictionaries in the world. It is more than 130 years old and often adds new words to 【小题1】 up with the times.

Recently OED added more than 1,000 new words 【小题2】 its online dictionary. Some of these, new words are fun ones, 【小题3】 others have a long history. YOLO(You only live once), for example, is popular on the social media. People use it to express the 【小题4】 of making the most of the present time by taking risks. But in 2013 the US singers Adam Levine and Kendrick Lamar used it in a 【小题5】 song called YOLO. They used it in an opposite way,   singing, “ You only live once… So don’t get too crazy. It’s not 【小题6】 the risk.”

“Witching（巫术）hour” is another addition（添加物）to the dictionary. British novelist Roald Dahl, who 【小题7】 born about 100 years ago, came up with the phrase. It first 【小题8】 in his children’s book The BFG. Dahl wrote that the witching hour was a special 【小题9】 in the middle of the night when everyone was in a deep sleep, and all the dark things places and had the world all to 【小题10】.

Everything surely changes. So does language.
