When you and your family go out for dinner, do you notice how many dishes you usually order? It’s OK if you finish all of them. But if you waste too much food, you need to pay for it.

Last year, China’s top legislature(立法机关)reviewed(审议)a draft law(法律草案)for stopping food waste for the first time. In general, a draft will become law after the top legislature reviews it three times.

According to the draft law, restaurants should tell customers not to order too much. If customers leave too much food uneaten, restaurants can charge(收费)them for food waste. The law also bans(禁止)waiters from encouraging people to order too much food . Some restaurants may use the “N—1” mode for people to order dishes. “N” stands for the number of persons at a table. So if there are six people at your table, you should order just five dishes, which can help people control the amount of dishes in a proper way.

The draft law also asks schools to teach their students to avoid food waste. It also bans TV programs about overeating and overdrinking. Producers of such programs will face a fine of up to 100,000 yuan.

Food waste happens in many places and has long been a big problem around the world, we need to obey the law and refuse to waste food.

You may have heard the saying “The Yangtze River is China’s mother river.” It is almost 6,400 kilometers long. As the world’s third-longest river, it covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone(长江经济带) covers eleven provinces and cities, making up about forty percent of China’s total population and GDP.

On December 26, China passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which came into force on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.

The mother river is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, because of overfishing and water pollution, the river’s Chinese paddlefish has died out there. There’s also desertified land and soil pollution near the river.

According to the law, fishing will not be allowed in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways, including its major tributaries(支流) and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined(罚款) 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.

Digging sand will be strictly limited(限制) in the river. Many companies are digging sand along the river. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water to decline.

Companies and factories along the river will need to focus on green development. If their activities do harm to the waterways, they will be moved away, the law says.

One nice thing about electric (电动的) cars is that they’re quiet. But some people believe they’re too quiet. To help keep walkers safe, all new models of electric cars in Europe must now make noise when they move.

Most of common cars are noisy. We expect cars to make noise, and may not think too much about ear noise, unless the noise is very loud.

But without thinking about it, we actually use car noise to stay safe. The noise gives us information about where the car is and how fast it is traveling. For blind people, this is even more important, because they can’t see anything.

But cars that are traveling under electric power don’t make the noise that we’re used to. They can surprise people when they move to them quietly. A study shows that the electric cars are more dangerous.

Because of this, some makers make a fake (假的) engine noise or another sound for the electric cars. This gives people nearby a warning that a car may be coming their way.

But until recently, whether a car makes noise doesn’t depend on the maker of the car. Now there is a law (法律). All new models of electric cars in Europe must make a warning noise. Beginning in 2021, every new electric car sold in Europe must make noise. The noise must begin when the car is traveling at less than 20 kilometers an hour, or when it is backing up. The sound should also give an idea of what the car is doing. For example, when the car is becoming faster, it should sound like it is becoming faster.
