The United Nations put out the most complete report on the problem of food waste. It found that the world wasted about 17% of all the food. “That’s about a billion tons of food a year.” The study looked at some different ways in which food was wasted at home, in restaurants and in shops.

It turned out that most food waste, about 61%, happened at home. The food thrown out at home worked out to about 74 kilograms for each person every year. Restaurants caused about 26% of the food wasted. The other 13% was thrown away by shops.

Food wasted was about the same rate(比率)in all but the poorest countries. Many people thought rich countries wasted more food than the countries that were less rich. But it turned out not to be true. In fact, some richer countries wasted less food than common countries. People in rich countries wasted less food at home because they ate out more often.

The report pointed out that millions of people were still hungry. Wasting food is also bad for the Earth. Farming creates between 10% and 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions(温室气体排放)which make the environment worse.

The report said it was important for all countries to study food waste more carefully to find ways to solve the problem. Some possible uses for food waste include making food for animals and burning food waste to create energy. The important thing is to keep food from simply going into rubbish bins.

Charlie entered the shop and laid fifty pence (便士) on the counter (柜台).

“One Wonka’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight,” he said, remembering how much he loved the one he had on his birthday.

The man behind the counter looked fat. He turned around and reached behind him for the chocolate bar, then he turned back and handed it to Charlie. Charlie grabbed it and quickly tore off the wrapper and took a big bite. Then he took another … and another… and oh, the joy of being able to put large pieces of something sweet and solid into one’s mouth!

“You look like you wanted that one, sonny,” the shopkeeper said pleasantly.

Charlie nodded, and his mouth was filled with chocolate.

The shopkeeper put Charlie’s change on the counter. “Take it easy,” he said. “It’ll give you a stomachache if you eat it like that without chewing (咀嚼).”

Charlie went on wolfing the chocolate. He couldn’t stop. And in less than half a minute, the whole thing had disappeared down his throat. He was quite out of breath, but he felt fairly happy. He reached out a hand to take the change. Then he stopped. His eyes were just above the level of the counter. They were staring at the silver coins lying there. The coins were all five-penny pieces. There were just nine of them altogether. Surely it wouldn’t matter if he spent just one more coin.

“I think,” he said quietly, “I think I’ll have just one more of those chocolate bars. The same kind as before, please.”

“Why not?” the fat shopkeeper said, reaching behind him again and taking another Wonda’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight from the shelf. He laid it on the counter.

Charlie picked it up and tore off the wrapper… and suddenly… from under the wrapper… there came a bright flash of gold.

Charlie’s heart stood still.

“It’s a Golden Ticket! ”shouted the shopkeeper. “You’ve got a Golden Ticket! You’ve found the last Golden Ticket! Come and look at this, everybody! The kid found Wonka’s last Golden Ticket! Right there in his hands! He will be one of the five lucky children to be shown around Wonka’s chocolate factory!”

In a few seconds, there was a crowd of about twenty people around Charlie, and many more were pushing their way in from the street.

My parents taught me not to waste food. My mum always found ways to make leftovers(剩余食物) taste good. I went to YiLan to learn about some of their special food. As I was there, I learned about the food and the history of the area. I learned that they don’t waste food, either, and they use leftovers!
Many years ago, there was not enough food for everyone. People learned to cook and eat almost everything. They had to think of ways to make special dishes. One of these dishes is kao zha. It   made   with leftovers like
