The market is a concept(概念). If you are growing tomatoes for sale, you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbors and some to the manager of the supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them. If you take care of a sick person to get money, you are producing for the market. If your father is a worker or a driver or a doctor, he is producing goods or service for the market.

When you spend your income(收入), you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in shops, supermarkets, gas stations and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. When the boss hires you to drive a truck, he is buying your labor in the market. The market may seem to be something abstract(抽象). However, it is very concrete to each person who is making and selling something. It is telling if nobody buys your tomatoes, it won’t be long before you get the information. Chopsticks are a pair of small equal-length sticks, usually made of wood, used for eating Asian food. Chopsticks are mainly used in China. And it is believed that the first chopsticks were developed in China. Chopsticks play an important role in Chinese food culture. Chinese chopsticks are usually 9 to 10 inches long. They are round on the eating end which means heaven (天), and the other end is square which means earth. The appearance of chopsticks said goodbye to those days when our Chinese ancestors(祖先)had to use their hands to eat.

Besides, the use of chopsticks has also been a part of Chinese food culture. There are some taboos that you must pay great attention to when you use chopsticks. Firstly, don’t use them to hit your bowl or plate. Secondly, never use them to point at others. Thirdly, don’t put them in different food without taking something. Fourthly, don’t cross the chopsticks on the table. And lastly, don’t leave your chopsticks standing in the rice. Chinese people do this only when they honor (尊重) the dead.

Nowadays, chopsticks have many new usages. For example, you can buy a pair as a gift to your friends and relatives. In Chinese, it reads “筷子”, which means having sons soon, so a newly-married couple will be very happy to accept it as their wedding gift.

When you are busy with schoolwork and making friends, do you envy (羡慕) babies? Although they don’t seem to care about anyone or anything, a study says this may not be the truth.

Two-year-old babies care about how others see them. They even try to manage their image (形象) when others are around them, according to scientists from Emory University in the US.

Scientists did tests on 144 babies from the ages of 14 to 24 months. They showed the babies a robot with two buttons (按钮) on it. When the babies pressed the buttons, the scientists gave them a feedback (反馈). When the babies pressed the first button, the scientists would act happy and praise the baby. But when the babies pressed the second button, the scientists would frown (皱眉) and pretend to be unhappy.

They found that when there were no adults around, children would press the second button more often. But when adults were watching, they would press the first button more often.

Older children and adults tend to show the different kinds of behavior. When others are watching, people tend to behave better. When no one is paying attention, they behave badly, Sara Valencia Botto, the author of the study, told the Telegraph.

“Studies before found that children start to care about what others think of them around the age of 4. But this new study suggests that the age is earlier. In addition, 2-year-old children will change their behavior to be more active,” Botto said.

If you don’t use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak; when you start using them again, they will gradually (逐渐地) become stronger again. Everybody knows this. Yet many people don’t seem to know that it is the same as our memory.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame (责怪), and few of us know that it is just his own fault.

Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but they usually have better memories? This is because they can’t read or write and they have to remember things; they can’t write them down in a little notebook. They must remember dates, names, songs and stories; so their memories are being exercised the whole time.

So if you want a good memory, learn from these people: practice remembering.
