Elias Howe is always used to going to bed at 4 o’clock in the morning. Working all night became his living habit. Who’s Elias Howe? You may never hear of him. He was born in America. The sewing (缝纫) machine was invented by him.

Over 100 years ago, without modern machines. people had to do the sewing by hand. Elias decided to design a machine to do the sewing instead of our hands. However, he had a trouble. He couldn’t get the thread (线) to run around the needle (针). Inventing sewing machine was his dream. So he did not give up. He kept thinking about how to solve this problem.

Once he was tired, he slept in bed. He had a dream. In the dream he was caught by a king. The king ordered him to build a perfect sewing machine, or the king would kill him. Elias met the same problem as before. The king was so angry that he ordered his soldiers to kill him. The soldiers raised spears (长矛) and came up to him. Suddenly Elias noticed something. There was a hole in the tip (尖端) of each spear.

Before the spears stuck to his body, Elias woke up from the dream. And he realized that he had found the answer to the problem. Instead of getting the thread to run around the needle, he made it run through a small hole in the tip of the needle. A simple thought finally made Elias invent the first sewing machine.

Making film with “magic”

Meet Sora, the cool model from OpenAI. It can turn your words into videos like magic! Just tell Sora your idea, and watch it make a video right before your eyes.

How good is it?

Videos created by Sora look good on both big and small devices (设备), such as computers and smartphones. Sora can also make scenes with lots of people doing different things with clear details (细节). It also knows how things should look in real life.

Why is it so good?

Sora looks at many videos and learns from them by breaking them into very small bits (片段). It uses these bits to make a new video. The new video is gray at first and very messy—you can’t tell what’s in it. Then, Sora fixes the video until it looks good and smooth.

Sora also gets help from ChatGPT, which turns the user’s short sentences into clear instructions. This helps Sora make the video just as you asked.

Is it good enough?

Sora may find “busy” pictures hard to understand. For example, when a person moves, things around them change. In one video created by Sora, a grandma blows the candle on a birthday cake, but the flame (火焰) doesn’t move. Sora may not be able to tell “left” from “right” and mess up a person’s leg moves.

【小题1】Sora is good at __________.
A.doing magicB.making long videos
C.making videos in black and whiteD.making videos from given words
【小题2】How does Sora learn to make videos?
A.By breaking videos into bits.B.By looking up books about making videos.
C.By understanding long instructions.D.By using magic to make videos.
【小题3】What role does ChatGPT play in helping Sora make videos?
A.ChatGPT makes videos for Sora.
B.ChatGPT fixes the messy videos.
C.ChatGPT helps Sora understand the instructions.
D.ChatGPT teaches Sora how to make use of pictures.
【小题4】A “busy” picture to Sora is a picture that _________.
A.shows a change in people’s feelingsB.has many movements at a time
C.shows someone is busy at that timeD.is too easy for Sora to learn from
【小题5】According to the last paragraph, videos made by Sora are not _______.

About 2500 years ago in ancient Greece, famous sculptor (雕刻家) Phidias created a huge statue (雕像) of Zeus king of the Greek gods. It stood in a big temple building in his honor in Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The statue was destroyed by fire in the 5th century AD.

However, the students who come from Kenne saw State University in Georgia, used 3D printing technology to make the model of the statue according to the size of it.

The model was made out of plastic and took over six weeks to create. It opens up a whole new world of interacting with that sculpture. The sculpture was created for the Millennium Gate Museum in Atlanta Georgia. For an exhibit to remember the 20th anniversary of its 1996 Olympic Games. It remains the center of the museum today.

It was so great the difference of such a classical looking object. Students at the university use 3D printing technology to create modern works as well, it plays an important role in copying ancient treasures. “We really know the educational and building treasures, we are the owners of at this time, and we should try our best to pass them to the next generation.” Cook said.

Historically, most cars have run on gasoline(汽油), but that may change in the future: cars can also run on other liquid fuels(液体燃料)and electricity.

Gasoline is from oil. The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons(碳氢化合物). Gasoline provides great power for cars. However, it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise. So gasoline can’t be the best fuel.

Another choice is electricity. Electricity cars can be as efficient(效能好的)as cars using gasoline. And they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive. Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.

The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.

One way to make such fuels is to get CO2 from the air and put it in water. Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.

Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use. But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.

For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it. Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline. Governments and car producers are doing everything they can to cut down the costs. In the end, the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.

A.produce less pollution
B.will become more and more expensive
C.will become more popular
D.are more efficient than those using gasoline

A.How Do We Protect Our Planet?B.What Are the Fuels’ Differences?
C.What Is the Best Fuel for Cars?D.How Do We Make Fuels for Cars?
