Do you know whose job is to stop food from going from one country to another? B-E-A-G-L-E-S (米格鲁猎犬)! Do you know why? Because these dogs love food. They are perfect for the job.

Beagles work at airports in a lot of countries, for example Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Their job is to sniff out food. These dogs have special noses. They can even smell food in bags or boxes. When a dog finds a bag with food inside, it sits in front of the bag. If the dog finds the food, the workers will give them something good to eat.

These dogs don’t live in a house because the food in houses distracts (干扰) them. Their noses are very important. Living away from people helps to protect their noses.

These working dogs should not be afraid (害怕的) of large groups of people or other dogs. They should not be afraid of loud noises. They should feel well when travelling in a car.

Next time when you’re at an airport and see police dogs, don’t play with them. They are busy. They’re working to keep us safe.

In 1938, a fishing boat off the coast of Africa pulled up its nets. One net held a very strange fish, five feet long and bright blue. Strangest of all, it had fins   (鳍)   that looked like legs!
In the nets, only this fish stayed alive for several hours. Before the fish began to rot (腐烂 ), a young woman made a drawing of it. She sent her drawing to a scientist on sea life, Professor J. B. Smith.
Upon seeing her drawing of the fish, Smith couldn’t believe his eyes. Could it be true? It just didn’t seem possible, but there it was. It could be only one thing, a coelacanth, a fish people believe having died out(灭绝)fifty million years ago. How could the fish be swimming about only a few days before?
If we found one, there must be others. The professor put up posters offering a reward for catching such a fish. Other scientists laughed at Smith. They thought the search was a waste of time. Years passed. It seemed the other scientists were right. But Smith never gave up hope. One day, fourteen years later, the professor received a telegram. Afish had been caught that looked like the one in the poster. Would the scientist fly to the region and check the fish? Smith did.
With shaking fingers the professor raised the cloth around the fish. It was exactly like the one in the young woman’s drawing. It was a coelacanth,a missing link(关联)with the past!
