In July, China introduced the “double reduction (双减)” policy. It hopes to reduce schoolwork burden(负担)on primary and junior high school students. The policy calls for reducing homework and after-school classes. According to the policy, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework. After-school training institutions(校外培训机构)are not allowed to offer extra education courses or advanced(超前的)teaching on weekends, holidays or during winter and summer vacations. One month has passed since the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”
According to Shen, students have enough time to process new knowledge now. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms(蚯蚓)in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books.”
For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called “leadership development” where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond schoolwork,” said Zhang.
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points,” Zhang said.
Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline(自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind other students,” he said. “

Fights at school sometimes happen. But how can you keep away from a fight? Here’s something you can do.
◇Be calm (冷静). Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can’t solve problems. Neither can a fight. Instead, it may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone involved (卷入) in a fight will be punished, no matter who started it. There are no winners in a fight.
◇Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn toward the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop” before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn’t stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.
◇ ▲ Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up. Also, you can tell him if he gets involved in a fight, he may get hurt and be punished. Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.

According to UNICEF (联合国儿童基金会), over a third of students aged 13 to 15 worldwide have experienced bullying. Bullying is becoming a big problem at schools. But a school in China is trying to do something about it. Aofeng School in Fuzhou has put special gadgets (装置) in the school’s toilets. These gadgets can detect (检测到) it when someone is being bullied. They use voice recognition (识别) technology and can hear certain words that might mean someone is in trouble.
When the system (系 统) hears these words, it sends a signal to the teachers. The teachers can then go and help the student who is being bullied. The school says this system is still being tested, but they hope it will help stop bullying at their school.
Bullying can be a very serious problem. Sometimes, teachers and principals don’t see the early signs of bullying. This can mean the bullying gets worse and worse. For example, in Handan, Hebei Province, three middle school students plotted and took the life of their 13-year-old classmate who they had been bullying for a long time.
Paying close attention to smaller acts of bullying is important. This can help stop the bullying before it gets very bad. The Fuzhou school’s new system uses technology to help teachers know when bullying is happening. But technology alone is not enough. To solve this problem, we need all-round education. Parents, teachers and schools should all do their parts to stop bullying in schools.

Step 2: Think of ways
Think of ways to make yourself feel better. For example, how to get good grades at school is a big worry for many students. If it is also your problem, ask yourself these questions: Why are grades important? What do they mean to me? How do I prepare for class? Do I have a good place to do my homework? Do I try different ways of studying?
You may feel better after thinking about them. If you can’t think of anything to make yourself feel better, it is time to jump to Step 3.
Step 3: Ask for help
Worrying can make you feel lonely. When you’re worried, you can ask for help. You can share your feelings and let others try to help. Also, if you tell others, and they can come up with ways to help you.
