Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people will think of Confucius(孔子), whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children fromnoblefamilies could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today ,people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. “When I am with three people of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their qualities and follow them.”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled. All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”
Confucius is not only a great teacher but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. “A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others,” he said.

A group of frogs were travelling through the forests, and two of them fell into a deep hole. When the other frogs saw how deep the hole was, they told the two frogs that they would die. The two frogs ignored(忽视) what they said and tried to jump up and out of the hole. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, the hole was too deep, they would die, it was no use to try. Finally, one of the frogs followed what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the other frogs shouted at him to stop and just wait to die. He jumped even harder until finally he succeeded(成功). The other frogs were surprised and said, "Didn’t you hear us?" Little river ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert. “I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problems crossing the desert,” she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly disappearing(消失) into the sand. After many tries, she still couldn’t succeed. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If a breeze(微风) can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little river answered, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.”
“That’s because you can’t give up what you are. Let’s yourself evaporate(蒸发) into the breeze, and it can take you across.” said the desert. “Give up what I am now? No! No!” The little river could not accept this idea. “The breeze can carry the vapor(蒸汽) across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will make a river again,” said the desert. “And whether you’re a river or vapor, your nature never changes.” Hearing this, the little river went into the open arms of the breeze. When I was in primary school, I got into a big argument (争吵) with a boy in my class. I have forgotten what the argument was about.
I was sure that I was right and he was wrong. But he kept saying that I was wrong and he was right. Our teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson.
She brought us up to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large, round ball. I could see that it was black. She asked the boy what color the ball was. “White,” he answered.
I couldn’t believe he said the ball was white, when it was clearly black! Another argument started between the boy and me. This time was about the color of the ball.
The teacher told me to go stand where the boy was standing and told him to come stand where I had been. We changed places, and then she asked me what the color of the ball was. I had to answer, “White.” It was a ball with two differently colored sides.
From his viewpoint (视角) it was white, but from my side it was black.
Sometimes we need to look at things from the other people’s view in order to truly understand them.
