Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone? If yes, you are not alone. These days, many people can’t live without their phones. They reach for them as soon as they wake up in the morning. They keep checking their apps, such as QQ and Wechat, to get the latest news.

It may be difficult for these people to give up the bad habit, so Google developed an app called Dashboard to help them. This app helps users manage the time they spend on their phones.

First, Dashboard allows the users to look at their phone habits. For example, users can see how many times they have unlocked their phones, how many times they have checked their apps, and how much time they spend on each app each day. Once the users see this information, they will be able to make some changes. They can set a time limit(限制) for how long they can use each app every day. After they’ve hit the limit, they won’t be able to use the app until the next day. What’s more, Dashboard can help keep the phones silent when users put their phones face down, so they will use the phones less. If you truly want to make full use of your free time instead of spending hours using your smartphone, this new app is just a good choice. After all, controlling yourself and having a strong will can help you most.

The Chinese first made paper about 2, 000 years ago. China still has pieces of paper which were made as long ago as that. But Chinese paper was not made from the wood of trees. It was made from the hairlike parts of certain plants.

Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. Scandinavia(斯堪的纳维亚半岛), which now makes a great deal of the world’s paper, did not begin to make it until l, 500. It was a German named Schaeffer who found out that one could make the best paper from trees. After that, the forest countries of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the United States became the largest paper producers. Today in Finland, which makes the best paper in the world, the paper industry is the biggest in the land. New paper-making machines are very big, and they make paper very fast. The biggest machines can make a piece of paper 300 meters long and 6 meters wide in one minute.

For 13-year-old Brooke Martin, seeing her golden dog Kayla has become much easier, even when she’s not at home. Martin made a kind of machine—iCPooch. It allows pet owners to video chat with their pets and sends food from other places.
When a dog owner puts the iCPooch app on a phone, he or she can connect to the iCPooch machine at home and start talking. The owner's image(影像) and voice will be on the screen. When the owner pushes a button on the iCPooch app, the machine will give the dog some food that has been stored inside the box.
How could Martin come up with the idea? The idea came to the Washington girl when she took a business class last year. That led her to think about helping her pet Kayla. Kayla always looked sad when she was left alone at home.“I wanted to know how you could talk to your dog if you were not at home. And what if you were able to give them a treat while you were away?” Martin explained her idea.
Now Martin and her family have set up a company. They’ve had investments (投资) from businessmen and asked a factory to make the product. They expected to sell 8,000 products by the end of 2015.

The world has been completely changed by computers. It is hard to imagine modern life without them. How many of us actually know where they came from, though? Anyone who has ever used a computer or a smartphone should pay respects to Alan Turing.

Alan Turing was born in London in 1912. From a young age, he showed an excellent ability for math. When he was 16, he knew about Albert Einstein’s work. Not only did he understand it completely, but he had his own ideas on how to add to it.

Later on, during World War II, Turing played an important role in researching German codes (密码). This made it possible for the Allies (同盟国) to understand German messages. After the war, Turing threw himself into making a machine that could do with information.

While Turing never actually built a computer, his idea formed the basis (基础) for all modern computers. Turing described a machine that had a tape. On the tape would be symbols that could be read by the machine. The machine could also add its own symbols, since its tape would not run out. Basically, Turing had described a computer program. Unluckily, he never saw how his ideas would change the world. Turing killed himself in 1954, but his work lives on in the computers we use every day.

【小题3】What is the text mainly about?
