Jurnee Farrell has played volleyball for Howard University throughout her four years at the school. During the second year, her coach encouraged all the players on his team ________ a member of Be The Match, which works to save lives through marrow donation（骨髓捐献）. Farrell accepted the coach’s ________ gladly because she thought it was really a meaningful thing.

Two years later, Farrell ________ that she was a match for a 57-year-old woman with leukemia（白血病）. ________ she received several months of physicals and blood tests. Farrell’s donation date was November 19. Donating that day also meant that ________ playing an important match with her teammates, which would take place that weekend. “Although it is a pity that I can’t take part in the game, it is surely worth,” Farrell said. ________ coach supported her in going through with the donation. “You’re doing something ________ than volleyball,” he told her.

Soon after, Farrell ________ the donation. A few days later, she was sitting on the sofa cheering when her teammates won ________ match. She was proud of her teammates for their victory and also herself for saving a life.

Farrell said, “For you, to be in pain for four or five days is nothing compared ________ someone who has been in pain for years. If you get a chance to help someone in such an easy way, you shouldn’t hesitate（犹豫）.”

Jerry was the kind of man who was always in a good mood and always had something positive (积极) to say.

One day I asked him, “You _________ be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?” Jerry replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two _________ today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. ‘I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or to _________ it.”

Several years later, I heard that Jerry left the back door open one morning and was robbed (抢劫). While trying to stop the thief, he was shot (射伤). I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. I asked him what had _________ his mind when he was taken to the hospital.

Jerry replied, “The first thing that came to my _________ was that I should have closed the back door. Then I _________ that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.” Jerry continued, “The nurses _________ telling me I was going to be fine. But when they rushed me into the emergency (急救) room and the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses _________ me. In their eyes, I _________, ‘He’s a dead man.’ I knew I needed to take action.”

“What did you do?” I asked.

“Well, a nurse asked __________ I was allergic (过敏的) to anything.” said Jerry, “Yes,” I replied. The doctors and nurses were waiting for my reply… I took a deep __________ and said, “Bullets (子弹)!” Over their laughter, I told them, “I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.”
