Where do you usually use the mobile phone, at home, on the bus, or in the street while walking? Anyway, schools are certainly no longer a place to use it.
Recently, a rule on mobile phone use was passed in China. According to it, students had better not bring mobile phones to school. If they want, they need to get their parents’ and school’s permission (允许). What’s more, all phones must be kept by teachers during class time.
It’s said that the main purpose of the rule is to protect students’ eyesight (视力) and prevent them from getting lost in the Internet and video games.
In 2019, China had 175 million Internet users under the age of 18, with 74% having their own mobile phones, according to a report last year. The report found mobile phone users in this group used their phones mostly for online learning, listening to music and playing games.
It’s reported that teachers mustn’t ask students to finish homework on mobile phones. Schools should provide more public phones to help students get in touch with their parents.
Parents and teachers widely support the rule. In a survey on Weibo, 54% of 1,900 people said they believed it wasn’t necessary for school children to take mobile phones to schools. Over a quarter wanted a more flexible (灵活的) rule, with 20% saying students needed mobile phones at school.

It’s eleven o’clock at night, four students still stayed up late playing computer games, although they knew they would have an English test the next day.
The next morning, they came up with an idea to get out of having to take their test. Each student put some dirt (土) on their face and hands, and then they went to the English teacher’s office. They told the teacher that they had a flat tire (轮胎爆胎) on the way to school, and they spent the whole morning pushing their car back to school. The teacher listened, and to the students’ surprise, he said that they could do the test in three days.
On the day of the test, the students went to their teacher’s office. The teacher put all four of the students in four different rooms to take the test. The students didn’t mind. They were just so happy because they had three extra days to study and prepare for the test. In fact, to get better grades, they review the lessons carefully. The first World Report on Vision (视力) by the World Health Organization (WHO) came out on October 10th, 2019. According to the report, near-sightedness (近视) is an alarming problem among young adults. In the United States, about 40% of young adults are near-sighted. But this situation pales compared with that of young adults in China.
China Daily reported more serious vision problems in China in 2019. In the report, 80% senior high school students are near-sighted, followed by 71.6% in junior high school, 36% in primary school and 14% of 6-year-olds in kindergarten. This is a shocking fact to the society. What causes this eyesight problem? Besides family history, there are some other reasons, such as not having enough outdoor activities, being short of enough sleep and too much use of electronic products.
However, many young people don’t take near-sightedness seriously. They think that it is easy to solve the problem with the help of eye drops, clever glasses, contact lenses or eye operations. And some young people even think that it is cool to wear glasses. But the real facts are not like that. Although glasses, contact lenses and other ways may help solve the problem of the near-sightedness, they are lifelong expenses. Not every family can afford them. What’s more, serious near-sightedness can cause other eye diseases in middle age, some of which can even cause loss of vision.
It is time for us to take action to protect our eyesight. Go out and do more outdoor exercise. Have enough sleep and useless electronic product. Good eyesight is priceless. So let’s try our best to take care of our eyesight.
