Teenagers can be great adventurers(探险家). In August, Bao Naixuan, a 14-year-old student from Qingdao No. 39 Middle School, became the youngest person to finish the Rizhao-Qingdao OP sailboat race on his own. The race was 66 nautical miles(海里) long, about 122 kilometers long.
The OP, also known as the Optimist, is a small, single-handed sailboat that is easier to sail than larger boats. It is suitable for younger sailors. But this doesn’t mean Bao’s adventure was simple. He sailed for three days without stopping all by himself.
During the race, Bao found himself in a windless area in the Dongjiakou Channel. He was in danger if he didn’t keep moving. To keep himself safe and continue the race, he had to paddle(划桨) for a few hours without the help of the wind. This caused him to fall five hours behind other sailboat racers.
To catch up, Bao had to sail for about 11 hours each day for the rest of the race, longer than he’d been sailing previously(此前地). At night, he had to face the unknown ocean alone.
Luckily, Bao had the skills to beat the other sailors. He’s been sailing since he was 9 years old with the help of his father, a sailing coach. He practices sailing even during holidays.
“Sailing is very interesting and helpful. It has taught me how to fight against pressure and show my intelligence,” Bao said.
