In an emergency, you can follow the steps of Dr ABC to help to save a patient in time.

Danger: Make sure that you and the patient are not in any danger or at risk. Before going near the patient, you must make sure that the area is safe.

Response: Shake and shout—Make sure to see if the patient will respond to you or not. Gently shake his or her shoulders asking, “What has happened?” or “Open your eyes.” If the patient doesn’t give any answer, it means he or she has lost consciousness.

Airway: Make sure that the patient’s airway (呼吸道) is clear. Don’t try to take out anything from the mouth unless it is right near the edge (边缘) of the mouth.

Breathing: Check the breath. Use your ear to check his or her breath. Place your ear above the patient’s mouth to listen and feel breath on your face.

Circulation: Check the pulse (脉搏). Use two fingers (not your thumb) on the patient’s wrist or neck.

These steps are in the order of importance. You should never change it. Besides, remember to give help in the right order every time. For example, problems with the airway should be dealt with first, then problems with breathing, and so on. But if there is danger which could hurt you, you should deal with it first so that you don’t become a patient too!
