Chloe Hawthorne, the owner of a famous restaurant, received a letter from her customer one day.

19th January

Dear Ms. Hawthorne,

I’m writing to express my disappointment with the evening my wife and I spent at your restaurant two nights ago. While the food was, as usual, very good, I regret (感到遗憾) to inform you that the service from our waiter, Max, was most unsatisfactory.

First of all, when we arrived, we discovered our table overlooking the garden had been allocated to some other customers. The new table we finally received was by the door and when I complained, Max just laughed.

Furthermore, as we were sitting down, he said too much to my wife, which deeply embarrassed her. When our meal came, he served the food carelessly and at the end cleared the plates in an awful manner.

I look forward to hearing from you with a satisfactory reply.

Rupert Metcalf

After reading the letter, Ms. Hawthorne left a message to Max:

Max, this is Chloe Hawthorne. I received a letter from Mr. Metcalf, one of our best customers. He complained about you in it. ________

Max wrote a letter to Ms. Hawthorne.

22nd January

Dear Chloe

I’m really thankful that you want to listen to my side of the story.

To start with, When Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf finally turned up, they were at least 45 minutes late. That’s why the table was allocated to some other customers.

As for the other table by the door, I went to a lot of trouble to set it up. When they complained about it, I couldn’t help laughing. But I have no reason to laugh at my customer.

Another thing, this business about his wife. I only complimented (恭维) her on her dress. She didn’t seem to mind.

OK. I admit I forgot to clear the table the way I was supposed to.

I apologize if I have caused you problems, but I’ve been really popular at the Café. Hope to hear from you soon.

All the best.

Max

Mike and Dave are walking through the woods one day when they find a big, deep hole.

Mike takes a look at it and says, “Wow! That looks deep.”

“It sure does,” says Dave. “Let’s drop some pebbles (卵石) in the hole. We can count   until we hear the pebbles hit the bottom.”

They throw some pebbles and wait. There’s no sound.

Mike says, “Wow! That is really deep. Let’s throw some great big rocks down there. Those should make a noise.”

So they pick up a few soccer-sized rocks and throw them into the hole. Again, they hear nothing.

They look at each other in amazement. Mike sees a big log (木头). He gets an idea. “Help me carry that log,” he says.

The two of them drag the heavy log over to the hole and drop it in. Still, no sound.

Suddenly, out of the woods, a goat (山羊) shows up, running like the wind. It rushes toward the two men, and then right past them. Suddenly it leaps (跳跃) into the air and down the hole.

Mike and Dave look at each other. “What just happened?” asks Dave.

Before Mike can answer, a farmer comes out of the woods. “Hey, have you guys seen my goat?”

Mike says, “You bet we did! Craziest thing I ever saw. It came running like crazy and jumped into that hole!”

“Nah,” says the farmer. “That couldn’t have been my goat. My goat was chained (被链条拴住) to a big log.”

Resting my head on Helen’s shoulder, I put my arms round her waist(腰). She drew me to her, and we rested in silence.

We had not sat long before another person came in. Some heavy clouds swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright; and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.

“I came on purpose to find you, Jane Eyre,” said she. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burs is with you, she may come too.”

We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire and looked cheerful. Miss Temple told Helen Buns to be seated in a low arm-chair on one side of the fire place. Then she took another and called me to her side.

“Is it all over?” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away?”

“I am afraid I never shall do that.”

“Why?”

“Because I have been wrongly accused(指责), and you and everybody else, will think me a bad girl.”

“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us.”

“Shall I, Miss Temple?”

“You will.” said Miss Temple, “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate(夸大) nothing.”

I made up my mind that I would be most modest and most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.
