Is there something in your community (社区) that could be changed? Is there a person in your neighborhood who needs help? If you’re hoping for someone to make a difference, that someone could be you!
Volunteering your time is a great way to make a difference in your community. And you’ll feel good about doing something that helps people or improves the places around you.
This past summer, my friends and I noticed how messy our neighborhood park was. We wanted it to be different. We worked without parents and teachers to clean up the park. We had a great time making the park even better than before, and now the whole neighborhood is able to share and enjoy it again.
Maybe cleaning up a park isn’t your choice, though. It doesn’t matter! You can turn anything that matters to you into a volunteer project. You can volunteer to do what you love to do. For example, you could help at an old people’s center, simply by talking or playing games with them to make their days better. If you’re great at math or English. You could volunteer to be a homework helper at your school.
You see, there is something for everyone. Whatever you do as a volunteer, your time will be enjoyed and that always feels good. Kids everywhere are making a difference by volunteering. You can make it, too!

As an insurance agent, I have to visit my clients at their homes to collect their insurance fees. I had an elderly client named Ms. Gooden. She is a sweet lady and always does her best to keep me at her home as long as she can. One day as I was leaving, she told me about the flowers she wished she had in her yard. I asked her, “If you got the chance to have flowers, what colors would you want?” She answered me in a sad voice that any color would be beautiful to her.
One day when I knew she had a doctor’s appointment, I went to a flower shop and bought many colorful and beautiful flowers. I went to her home and planted them in an area of the yard so that when she looked out the window she would see beautiful flowers.
The next time I visited her home she asked if I knew anything about the flowers. I told her no and we both smiled at each other. While I was sitting there she began to tell me about all of the beautiful butterflies that came to visit her new flower garden and about the bees which were busy working on the flowers. Some bees even fought with others over the flowers.
“I don’t know why they fight,” she said, “There are enough flowers for all of them.” She wouldn’t stop talking about this new-found joy in her life.
As I was about to leave I noticed she was so busy watching over her new garden and its visitors that she didn’t even try to keep me from leaving. I realized at that moment that Ms. Gooden had been suffering from what a lot of elderly people suffer from— she was just lonely. The few dollars spent on the flowers were well worth the joy those flowers brought to her face and to my heart.

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means one who offers his or her “services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta(加尔各答). The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit(精神) to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”

When we were scared, sad and helpless, you gave us courage, warmth and hopes. When we had to stay at home to keep away from the illness, you, workers, helped us buy living things; Leaving your children behind, you worked in the neighborhood every day, you never complained but smiled the whole day. When we needed all kinds of materials, you, drivers, drove them there without thinking twice; Running on the streets, between the cities, you made sure things went well as usual. | When we had coughs or fevers, you, ▲, tried your best to save our lives; Looking after the patients in the hospital day and night, you never gave up until the sick got well.
