The Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month and is also called the Double Ninth Festival. As both the month and the day are nine, it got this name. To celebrate the day, people usually climb mountains and enjoy chrysanthemum (菊花), so the festival is also known as the Height Ascending (登高) Festival or the Chrysanthemum Festival. In China, nine has the similar pronunciation with the word forever, meaning long life. So the Chinese government set the day as the Seniors’ Day.

The festival has a history of over 2,000 years. During the Warring States Period, there was the Chongyang Festival. But it was only celebrated in the palace. From the Han Dynasty, it began to be popular among the common people. The name of the Chongyang Festival first appeared in the Three Kingdoms Period. During the Jin Dynasty, there were customs of enjoying chrysanthemum and drinking wines on the day. It was not officially set as a festival until the Tang Dynasty. Since then, all the people have spent the festival with kinds of activities. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, people in the palace all ate flower cakes to celebrate. The emperor climbed the mountain on the day as well. In 1989, the Chinese government set the day as the Seniors’ Day.

As September has the clear sky and fresh air, it is a very good time to climb the mountain. There will be a happy sense of excitement by climbing the mountain. Also, it is good for health. In the Western Han Dynasty, people started to have the custom of climbing on the Chongyang Festival.

On the day, enjoying chrysanthemum is very popular as the flower means long life. Drinking chrysanthemum is regarded as a special way to prevent diseases and bad things. Eating Chongyang cakes is another tradition on the festival. There is no fixed way of the cake but the one with nine layers (层) with two sheep on it is the best. Two sheep mean Chongyang. Nine layers show people could do well in everything.

At the end the year, it’s time to start thinking about everyone’s favorite topic: gifts! More specifically (确切地), the giving of gifts and the culture surrounding them. Coming from the US, I have found gift-giving to be quite different in China compared to my home country. One example is the timing of when to open a gift. In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (the “giftee”) open the present as soon as they get it. They want to see their reaction (反应) of excitement and joy. In China, however, it’s more polite to thank the gifter for the gift and open it later in the privacy (私密).

Another aspect (方面) I found different was the openness and directness (直接) of giving money. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually done very secretly with the money put in a card and not discussed out loud. In China, money will be put in a flashy (显眼的) red envelope and given to giftees an open and direct way.

Finally, the monetary value (金钱的价值) of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US. An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement. But in China, it can make the giftee feel awkward (尴尬的). Besides, they will also get a sense of having to return the favor (恩惠) in the future to the gifter.

So, the next time you give a gift to somebody, remember that culture and meaning are part of every action we take.

Save the World's Trees
“When it comes to the Earth, there is no time to waste,” says the Earth Day Network. And that is right.Protecting our environment is very important, and World Earth Day was created in 1970 to ask more people to protect our environment. On April 22,people around the world celebrate Earth Day.
Every year there is a special topic, and this year it is “Trees for the Earth”,so Earth Day this year will be all about planting trees. They are planning to plant 7.8 billion trees within the next five years.
That's a big goal, and you might wonder why trees are so important.Because they can take in carbon dioxide(CO2) and protect the air quality(质量).CO2 is a chemical in our atmosphere, but humans make too much of it.Each person makes about 2.3 tons a year, which is bad for the environment.
Well guess what! Planting new trees is important because people cut down a huge number of trees.Last year, there were 3 trillion trees in the world, about 139 billion in China. But according to China Daily, the world's total number has been almost cut in half since human civilization(文明) began. That's because 15 billion trees are cut down every year.
So we need to plant more to make up for(弥补) the ones we lost. One tree can take in 21.8 kilograms of CO2 per year. And it's still one of the cheapest and best ways to get rid of CO2.
But don't forget that we can also help the environment by cutting down on how much energy(能源) or water we use every day.Every little thing helps.

When someone does something for us or gives us something, saying “thank you” is good manners. When we hurt someone, saying “I’m sorry” is also good manners. It’s good manners to say “excuse me” if we need to get another person’s attention. However, good manners are not only words but also actions. When we give someone else our seats on a crowded(拥挤的) bus, when we hold the door open for another person to walk through, when we knock before opening the closed door of a room, those things show good manners. When we meet someone for the first time, it’s good manners to smile and say “hello” and give our name. When people come to our house, it’s good manners to greet them with a smile, and say something like “thank you for coming” when they go home.

Sometimes, good manners be the things we don’t do. When we don’t talk with a full mouth or cut into the line, that is showing good manners. When we don’t try to get the attention of someone on the telephone, that’s good manners, too.

People often feel “not quite right”. Bad weather, a stressful(紧张的) day, and sickness can make people upset easily. But when we use good manners, we can make people feel more comfortable.
