Zhou Chuna, a normal 15-year-old girl, shared her experience of cosmetic surgery (整容手术), more and more young people in China are having cosmetic surgery. It was reported that 19 percent of Chinese medical beauty customers in 2020 were aged 18 or under.

Many beauty clinics (诊所) say that being more beautiful gives people an advantage in society, but the truth is that failed examples of cosmetic surgery are common to see. Once a teenage girl named Zhang had double eyelid surgery.

Moreover, a large number of beauty care centers actually open against the law. It is said that China has about 13, 000 beauty clinics.

More worrying, there is heated competition among the medical beauty clinics to win more teenage customers. Some businesses use catchphrases like “Only by becoming prettier can you be more loved” to spread “appearance stress”. And many beauty clinics advertise directly to teenagers, encouraging them to “make some changes and let your classmates be amazed by your beauty in the new term”. Some beauty clinics mislead their teenage patients by advertising low costs. One Internet user said she saw an advertisement for a 15-yuan treatment for pimples but the staff at the beauty clinic gave her a year’s surgery plan which cost 8, 000.

Many experts have said it’s dangerous for teenagers to have cosmetic surgery. Teenagers are more at risk to advertisement and social pressure, not to mention their level of physical maturity (成熟). That’s why they are calling for stricter rules on the beauty clinics when it comes to the treatment of teenagers.
