We celebrated the China Hanfu Day from April 28th to May 13th, 2018 in Xi’an. There were catwalk shows and traditional music concerts. That day people wore traditional Chinese clothing. Hanfu fans from all over the country gathered there to take photos and put them online for a Hanfu photo competition.
China Hanfu Day is on the third day of the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar. In old China, this day was also known as Shangsi Festival. Its aim (目的) is to encourage young Chinese to be proud of traditional clothing, as well as Chinese culture.
Han people lived in China before the Qing dynasty. Hanfu is their traditional clothing. It has a history of about 3,000 years and it also changes. However, some of its main characteristics (特点) remain. For example, there are two parts that overlap (交叠) on the front. People call it “Jiao Ling”. On the other hand, people usually use ribbons (系带) instead of buttons (扣子). It is the main characteristic of Hanfu, too.
China is becoming a leading country in the world, and the Chinese people feel more confident about its traditional culture than ever before. Wearing traditional clothing might be an interesting way of showing how we feel about this.

Dragon Head-raising Festival
China is a country with many colorful holidays and festivals. The Dragon Head-raising Festival—Longtaitou Festival is one of them.
This special day is on the second day of the second month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It stands for the start of spring and farming. In 2021, the day falls on March 14.
The dragon is important in Chinese culture. Chinese people call themselves the “descendants (传人) of the dragon”. Therefore, people celebrate the Dragon Head-raising Festival with many customs about dragons.
On the day in ancient times, people put ashes (灰) in the kitchen. This was to “lead the dragon into the house”. People believed that with the help of the dragon, they could have a good harvest in autumn.
Also, people eat special food on that day. The food is usually named after dragons. For example, people eat “dragon whiskers (须) noodles” and dumplings called “dragon ears”.
Today many customs have faded away (消退). But one that has remained is cutting hair. Many people have their hair cut on the Dragon Head raising Festival.
